0

The United Nations (UN) Eminent Peace Ambassador to Ghana, Dr Samuel Ben Owusu has called on the Government to enforce policies that would help protect water bodies in the country.

He observed that numerous water bodies in Ghana have been polluted by human activities such as galamsey, the disposal of refuse, the construction of structures in waterways, and the obstruction of waterways.

The above, he noticed, has become a threat to Ghana’s water, expressing worry that if care is not taken, Ghana may import water or buy water at a very high price in future.

The UN Peace Ambassador gave the warning after his return from the United Nations Global Water Sustainable Conference held in New York.

The United Nations Global Water Sustainable Conference was a three-day event held from March 22nd to March 24th, 2023 in New York

It was aimed at reaffirming the international agreed water-related goals and targets including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Amb. Dr Samuel Owusu represented the West African Mission of the International Association of World Peace Advocate and Ghana respectively.

Meanwhile, as the General Overseer of The Pottersville Church International, Covenant Christian Leadership College, Dr Samuel Ben Owusu said he was going to use his platform to educate the public on the need to protect water in the country.

We can’t cook with GHC0.97 anymore – Sch. Feeding caterers tell Gov’t

Caterers of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) want urgent increment in the feeding grant, insisting that the amount being allocated by the Government to prepare daily nutritious meals for pupils is woefully insignificant.

According to them, the GHC1.00 is not enough to purchase food items on the market to prepare quality meals and serve in the right quantity for the children, most of whom come to school on empty stomach.

They disclosed that an amount of GHC0.03 is even deducted from source as tax component from each of the GHC1.00 paid to them [caterers].
This implies that the caterers do not receive exactly the GHC1.00, but GHC0.97 per child per day.

Some of the caterers in the Bono East Region complained bitterly to some officials of the Ghana School Feeding Programme and the World Food Programme who had come to the region for a weeklong joint monitoring to assess the performance of the caterers and the impact of the school feeding programme.

The distraught caterers even though appreciated the Government for the introduction of the school feeding programme and the great impact it is making in the lives of millions of Ghanaian children in the deprived schools, they disclosed how it is sometimes inconveniencing most of them.

“We have tried so much to be quiet over the years hoping that something will be done to increase the feeding grant to at least GHC2.00 or GhC2.50 so that we can meet the cost of food items on the market but to no avail. We are crying and crying but nobody seems to hear us out. Prices of items are being increased almost every day, and so the President must know that we cannot go to the market with the same GHc1.00”.

The caterers asserted that a bag of beans which was sold between GhC250.00 and GhC300.00 last year, now sells between GhC800.00 and GhC950.00. A bowl of gari has also moved from GhC6.00 to GhC25.00, a maxi bag of local rice moved from GhC200.00 to GhC450.00 and prices of cooking oil, meat, fish and vegetables have also gone up astronomically especially in the last 6 months.

They indicated that, even though it is a policy direction for all the caterers to patronize locally produced foodstuffs from the local farmers, almost all the caterers prefer the imported foods because they are far cheaper.

The caterers said that some of them are still managing to cook for the school children because the imported food suppliers are always willing to supply food and other items like tin tomatoes, cooking oil and canned fish to them on credit, unlike the local farmers.

They also raised serious concern about the long delay in the payment of their arrears by the government, which they indicated, put them under unnecessary pressure.

“We are supposed to pre-finance the cooking for just one term and receive payment the following term. But for a long time now, the government always fails to pay us on time; and most at times we do not receive our payment in full. Sometimes instead of 66 cooking days’ arrears, the government can decide to pay us 20, 25 or 30 days and we will have to struggle for a long time before we will receive the remaining payments. And because we have to pay our cooks and suppliers at all cost, we always have to go and borrow from different sources, which put us in an uncomfortable situation”.

In reaction to the concerns raised by the caterers, the GSFP National Coordinator Mrs. Gertrude Quashigah appealed to the caterers to calm down and exercise restraint, noting that everything is being done towards the upwards adjustment of the feeding grant.

She said management of GSFP has been engaging the government for a while now on the issue. According to her, the GSFP has submitted a compelling proposal to the government through the supervisory ministry for an upward adjustment of the feeding grant.

Mrs. Quashigah further revealed that between GHC2.00 and GHC3.00 has been proposed taken into account the prevailing economic trend in the country. She expressed optimism that government would respond positively to the proposal.
She recalled that in 2018 government accepted GSFP’s proposal and increased the feeding grant from GHp.80 to GHC1.00. She therefore assured the caterers and Ghanaians in general that government is genuinely committed to the sustainability of the programme.

Source: Samuel Nyamekye Jnr.

The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, has reaffirmed her commitment to improving teacher welfare and upgrading educational infrastructure across the constituency.

Speaking at a workshop organised in collaboration with the International Community for Learning and Social Spectrum, the MP—who also serves as Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources—highlighted the need for both capacity building and better working conditions for teachers.

The workshop focused on equipping educators with skills in artificial intelligence and modern technology to enhance teaching and learning outcomes in schools.

According to her, such initiatives are critical in preparing teachers for the demands of an increasingly digital world. However, she stressed that training alone is insufficient without adequate infrastructure.

“We are equipping teachers with modern skills, but it is equally important to provide the right environment for them to apply this knowledge,” she noted, pointing to the need for improved school facilities, renovations, and better accommodation.

She also revealed plans to complete abandoned teacher bungalow projects in the constituency, describing decent housing as a key factor in teacher motivation and retention.

Also addressing participants, Awutu Senya West District Chief Executive, Kalala Nyamekye Hagan, urged teachers to embrace technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence, to improve their work and positively impact students.

Meanwhile, educational psychologist Marian Benewaa Babah-Alargi encouraged teachers to avoid discrimination in the classroom, stressing that every child possesses unique abilities that must be nurtured.

The event forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen education delivery in the constituency through innovation, infrastructure development, and teacher support.

Agradaa Calls for Limited Mobile Phone Access for Prisoners

Evangelist Patricia Asiedua has called for limited mobile phone access for inmates, saying it could help them maintain basic communication with loved ones.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s Entertainment Lounge hosted by Ramn Fada, the HeavenWay Champion Ministry founder- popularly known as Agradaa -argued that prisoners should at least be allowed to use basic phones, not smartphones, to stay in touch with family members.

Drawing from her eight-month stay in prison, she explained that strict monitoring often makes even simple conversations difficult, leaving inmates emotionally disconnected.

“There are times you are speaking to your partner, and because of how you are guarded, you cannot even say ‘I love you,’” she said.

She described prison life as challenging, recalling moments she had to carry blocks barefooted. Despite public doubt about her incarceration, she maintained that she endured the experience by the grace of God.

Agradaa also highlighted the lack of entertainment in prisons, noting that inmates become excited whenever outreach programmes are organised, as such events offer temporary relief from their daily routine.

She added that efforts by artistes like Stonebwoy to perform for prisoners are commendable, as they help uplift the spirits of inmates.

Source: Justice Adusi Poku

The Greater Accra Zongo Caucus has strongly condemned a recent attack on a Ghanaian citizen in South Africa, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.

In a statement issued by its coordinator, Ismaila Ali Horoya, the group said the attack underscores the ongoing vulnerability of Africans living within the continent and called for urgent action to address such incidents.

The caucus denounced xenophobia, violence, and discrimination against foreign nationals, particularly Africans, warning that such acts undermine the ideals of Pan-African unity and cooperation.

Commendation for Government Response

The group commended Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, for what it described as a swift and proactive response to the incident.

According to the statement, the minister’s engagement reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of its citizens abroad and strengthens confidence in Ghana’s diplomatic efforts.

Calls for Action

Despite acknowledging the response, the caucus called for further decisive measures from South African authorities, including a thorough and transparent investigation into the attack and the swift prosecution of those responsible.

It also urged authorities to strengthen protections for foreign nationals to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The caucus further appealed to the Government of Ghana to sustain diplomatic engagement with its South African counterparts to ensure the safety and rights of Ghanaians living abroad.

Solidarity With Victims

Reaffirming its position, the group expressed solidarity with the victim and others affected by xenophobic incidents, pledging continued advocacy for justice, accountability, and human rights.

Assin Fosu Assembly Commends Zoomlion’s Waste Collection Efficiency

0

The Assin Fosu Municipal Assembly has commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited for its efficiency in waste collection services within the municipality, while raising concerns over gaps in its disinfection activities lately.

This came to light during an engagement between officials of the Assembly and stakeholders on sanitation service delivery in the municipality.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon. John Oti Bless, stated that government’s decision to engage private companies in sanitation management was intended to improve service delivery, noting that Zoomlion remains the leading private sector player in Ghana’s waste management sector.

He stressed that the committee was committed to ensuring fairness and objectivity in its assessment of sanitation services.

“Our findings are supposed to be reported as they are and fairly,” he stated.

According to him, the committee receives feedback from community members who monitor sanitation activities and submit reports on the performance of Zoomlion and other companies.

He disclosed that the committee would compile its findings and formally present them to Zoomlion Ghana Limited to allow the company to respond before any further action is taken.

Hon. Oti Bless also praised Zoomlion’s Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP) initiative, describing it as an innovative waste management model he has consistently promoted in various forums.

“I have been marketing the IRECOP concept wherever I go because I believe it is a transformative solution,” he noted.

He, however, identified disinfection services and the Sanitation Improvement Package (SIP) as key areas where improvement is needed.

Responding to questions on the Assembly’s waste management strategy and utilization of government funding, the Municipal Coordinating Director Saaka Ibrahim, revealed that the Assembly had constructed ten mechanized boreholes this year and actively participated in all National Sanitation Day clean-up exercises.

The District Environmental Health Officer, Agyare Emmanuel, also commended Zoomlion for its operational efficiency.

Assin Fosu Assembly Commends Zoomlion’s Waste Collection Efficiency

He disclosed that the company currently supplies 11 waste containers to the municipality and has consistently ensured timely evacuation of waste.

“They are lifting the containers perfectly and we have not recorded issues of vehicle breakdowns in a long time,” he said.

Mr. Emmanuel further revealed that the Assembly has introduced a pay-as-you-dump waste disposal system, which has proven effective in improving sanitation management.

Despite these gains, he identified the absence of a cesspit emptier as a major challenge, explaining that the Assembly currently relies on a private operator for liquid waste management services.

He added that, with support from traditional leaders and transport unions, women have been engaged to clean transport stations and other public spaces that were previously handled by Zoomlion.

Assin Fosu Assembly Commends Zoomlion’s Waste Collection Efficiency

On fumigation services, he acknowledged that while the exercise continues, it is not conducted frequently enough.

“Fumigation goes on, but not too frequently, and we expect improvement in that area,” he stated.

He further disclosed plans by the Assembly to procure aboboyaas to support the transportation of waste from communities to designated container sites.

The discussions highlighted both the progress made in sanitation management in Assin Fosu and the need for stronger collaboration between local authorities, private waste management firms, and community stakeholders to address existing challenges.

Minority making strong impact despite numbers – Jerry Ahmed

0

The Second Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, says the Minority in Parliament is making a strong impact despite being outnumbered by the Majority.

Speaking on Bullet TV’s Morning Target hosted by Bright Amfo, Ahmed Shaib said although the Majority has the numbers to push decisions, the Minority focuses on quality contributions and detailed debates to influence national discussions.

He explained that pressure in Parliament is normal for both sides but insisted that the Majority is even under more pressure to deliver on promises to Ghanaians.

Shaib noted that the Minority has been deliberate in its actions, using press conferences, statements, and debates to draw attention to important national issues. He said these efforts help inform the public and ensure government accountability.

According to him, even though some people criticise the Minority for holding frequent press briefings, their work is necessary to keep records for the future and to explain issues clearly to citizens.

Minority Chief Whip Accuses Government of Intimidation and Rights Abuse

He pointed to debates, including discussions on the State of the Nation Address, to show how the Minority presents strong arguments and alternative views.

Shaib stressed that impact in Parliament is not only about numbers but also about substance, consistency, and the ability to speak on issues that matter to the people.

He maintained that the Minority will continue to engage actively and hold the government accountable in the interest of Ghanaians.
