People walk when we increase transport fares- GPRTU

A National Communications Team Member of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr Samuel Amoah says the Union does not take delight in increasing transport fares because when they do, most passengers turn to walk instead boarding their vehicles.

This, he said brings their transport business down so many times.

Due to this, GPRTU and about 15 other transport unions are calling on the government to remove some taxes on fuel so that fuel prices will reduce.

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), threatened to declare strike if government fails to ensure a reduction in the price of fuel.

They also gave indications that they will be forced to increase their fares if nothing is done about the situation.

Speaking with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu on Atinka Tv’s morning show, Ghana Nie, Mr Samuel Amoah reiterated that they have given government up to Sunday, November 28th to do something about the fuel prices or they go on strike on Monday, November 29th, 2021.

He said they are expecting government to remove about 1.50 pesewas tax on fuel so that the fuel price will come down.

“Someone will ask why we do not increase lorry fares, but what happens is that every time we increase lorry fares, it brings down our business. What we are looking for is that the taxes on fuel will be abolished so that the price will go down because when we increase lorry fares, most of the passengers walk. If they are going somewhere and they know that they can just make a call they will do it without going to the place. This has made our work slow, and so if we have to ensure that the prices of fuel come down, we will do that,” he said.
