President Akufo Addo has  commissioned the renovated Asomdwee Park where Ghana’s former President John Evans Atta-Mills was laid to rest in 2012.

In 2020, President Akufo Addo, tasked the Coastal Development Authority with an important assignment to execute on behalf of the people of Ghana a befitting renovation of the Asomdwee Park upon receiving a request from the Atta-Mills Institute for government’s support in renovating the Park.

Speaking at a short ceremony to commission the Park and also mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills, President Akufo Addo said, it was not right that the park had been allowed to deteriorate considerably over the years since the burial of former President Mills in 2012.

He said he was happy this renovation has happened under his watch as the President of the Republic adding that he didn’t undertake this step to bring division into the political party  the former President Mills belonged to.

Before the commissioning of the Park, some members of former President Atta-Mills’ family accused the government and the Coastal Development Authority of neglecting the family in the attempt to renovate the Park and requested the body of President Mills  be given to them for reburial in his hometown, Ekumfi-Atuam in the Central Region.

But responding to the said allegations, President Akufo Addo indicated that, such malicious and purported statements should be dismissed by the people of this great Nation.

Chief Executive Officer of the Coastal Development Authority, Jerry Ahmed Shaib in his welcome address said, work on the renovation of the Park started  in July 2020 and the scope of work included the following:

1.         Redesign and construction of ICT lab, library, cafeteria and artifact buildings,

2.         Construction of a concrete shed and replacement of alucobond panels over tomb of the Late President,

3.         Construction of a fence wall and two restrooms for security staff,

4.         Construction of entrance for General Public & VIPs,

5.         Paving of a 50-metre walkway to and around the tomb with porcelain tiles,

6.         Landscaping of the general area around the tomb,

He added that the Completion of this project, brings to a total 446 representing approximately 60% out of the 741 being executed by the CODA since 2020. With the remaining 40% also nearing the completion stages.

Mr. Samuel Koku Anyidoho, founder and CEO of the Atta Mills Institute in his remarks, thanked the President for listening to his plea to renovate the Park.
