Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has officially assumed office as the new Minister for Defence, marking the beginning of his tenure at the Ministry of Defence and his responsibility for overseeing the country’s defence administration.

Mr Adjei was formally received at the Ministry on his first day in office, where a Guard of Honour was mounted to welcome him as he took charge of the Defence portfolio.

The ceremonial reception formed part of activities to officially introduce the new minister to the Ministry and its senior leadership as he begins work on his mandate.

Following the Guard of Honour, Mr Adjei interacted with management and staff of the Ministry, exchanging pleasantries and familiarising himself with officials who will work closely with him in the discharge of his responsibilities.

Among those present were the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Emmanuel Kartey, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the various Service Chiefs of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the new minister to meet key officials responsible for the administration and operational affairs of the defence sector.

His interaction with the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces is expected to be particularly important as the Ministry works with the military leadership on issues relating to national defence, security, military administration and the protection of Ghana’s territorial integrity.

As Minister for Defence, Mr Adjei will work closely with the Ministry’s management and the Ghana Armed Forces to support the implementation of government’s policies and priorities within the defence sector.

He will also be expected to engage relevant state institutions and other stakeholders on matters concerning national security and defence, while providing political leadership to the Ministry.

The Ministry of Defence said the warm reception reflected its commitment to working closely with the new minister as he assumes responsibility for the sector.

The Ministry is expected to provide the necessary institutional support to enable Mr Adjei to effectively discharge his duties and advance the objectives of the government in the area of defence.

His assumption of office comes with the expectation that he will work collaboratively with senior officials, military commanders and staff of the Ministry to strengthen coordination and ensure the effective functioning of the defence sector.

The new minister’s engagement with the Chief of the Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs also signals the importance of close cooperation between the political leadership of the Ministry and the military command in addressing the country’s defence and security needs.

With the formalities of his assumption of office now completed, Mr Adjei is expected to settle into his new role and begin engagements on the key priorities of the Ministry.

His tenure will require continued collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, the Ghana Armed Forces and other relevant institutions to safeguard the country’s security interests and support national development.

The Ministry said it looks forward to working with the new Defence Minister as he takes on the responsibility of leading the Ministry and supporting the effective discharge of its mandate.
