Porous borders, human trafficking cause of mass recruit into terrorist groups – Adib Saani

Security analystAdib Saanihas attributed the mass recruitment of Ghanaians to some terrorist groups to porous borders, fester smuggling, arms and human trafficking.

The expert was explaining how over 300 young people have been integrated into the various GSIM-JNIM and EIGS katibas.

After undergoing training in training camps in the Sahel, these young recruits were sent back to their villages of origin, in particular to engage in religious proselytizing.

Reacting to the revelation on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with sit-in-host Nana Fianko (Mr Speaker), Security analyst, Adib Saani, mentioned that the development is as a result of series of surveys and assessments of the security situation in the Gulf of Guinea countries conducted by Promediation.

He added that the surveys discovered the establishment of armed groups in northern Ghana has also allowed terrorist groups to implement an active recruitment strategy.

According to Adib, figures from the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) in 2019, there were 44 official migration entry points in Ghana whereas in reality, there were more than 189 unofficial entry points on the border with Burkina Faso alone. This complicates our efforts to counter the threat.

“These terrorist groups want to expand their reach towards the coastal areas. So in 2019 for example, we did not witness any terrorist attacks in Ivory Coast, Togo and Benin. But just last year 2021, 13 attacks were recorded in Ivory Coast, 5 attacks in Benin and one attack in Togo,” Adib Saani told Nana Fianko.
