Probe UEW Council Chair and VC – UTAG to Akufo-Addo

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has with urgency called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to launch a full-scale investigation into the actions of Council Chair and Vice-Chancellor leading to the impasse at the school.

UTAG’s position stems from the fact that Governing Council Chairman, Prof. Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah and Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof Anthony Afful-Broni recently dismissed three senior members and 20 others by their own whims and caprices.

The three Messrs: Dr. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong and Prof Ephraim Avea Nsoh were dismissed on grounds of not following internal process or due process in resolving their grievances as well as exhibiting gross insubordination.

They are accused of breaching UEW Statutes of Clause 2, subsection B of their Schedule G which talks about insubordination, forming the basis for dismissal.

Addressing the Media in what they described as “unilateral interpretation of Clause 2, subsection B” and creating a path to deepen a new culture of fear and silence on UEW campus, National UTAG President, Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah mentioned that both Prof. E. N. Abakah and Rev. Fr. Prof Afful-Broni must resign for their fraudulent, vindictive attitude and conflict of interest cited against them.

UTAG is also calling on Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Office of the Special Prosecutor, Ministry of Education, CHRAJ and National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), to as well investigate several allegations levelled against the two leaders

And that management of the school is synonymous to reign of tyranny, which is characterized with divide and rule and selective justice.

For instance, the Vice Chancellor is accused giving birth to the whole mess by fueling and orchestrating the dismissal of his predecessor, Prof Mawutor Avoke and stripping off appointments of people deemed to be sympathizers of Prof Mawutor Avoke.

He also cited for allegations of malfeasance of GHC 5.7 million honorarium as well as allegations of inflated and cooked up contracts which were carried in Wednesday, March 13, 2019 edition of the Daily Graphic.

The Governing Council according to UTAG has overlooked this development.

On the part of Prof E. N. Abakah, he used his position as Chairman of UEW Governing Council to engineer a retroactive application of a statutory provision which did not apply to him when he was in active service to gain promotion.

And that he benefited in a pecuniary fashion because his promotion was backdated to December 19, 2013.

Clearly, they explained that such actions constitute conflict of interest, gross corruption, wanton dissipation of public funds and bending the rules to suit oneself.
