PUB: UTAG given opportunity to make further inputs after meeting Bawumia

A high-powered delegation from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) met the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Wednesday, December 16, 2020.

The meeting was to discuss the amendment of some portions of the Public University Bill (PUB) which has been re-laid before Parliament.

Parliament approved the Public Universities Bill at its second reading stage after the Bill was withdrawn and re-laid in the House in November 2020, although UTAG- national has opposed the passage of the bill.

UTAG argued that the bill in its current form was not appropriate and proceeded to make inputs for consideration, but according to UTAG, it could not confirm whether or not their  recommendations were included in the bill that was sent to Parliament.

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting on Atinka News, The National Vice President of UTAG, Dr. Otchere Addai Mensah said the bill has been given to UTAG to study and make further inputs.

The passage of the Public University Bill, 2020 gives the President, the powers to appoint Vice Chancellors and majority members of the University Council.

Per the draft Bill, a University Council shall consist of nine persons, including a chairperson who will be nominated by the President.

The draft Bill when passed will see to the renaming of The University of Professional Studies, Accra after its founder, Nana Opoku Ampomah.

University of Health and Allied Sciences will be named after a former member of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and Convention People’s Party (CPP).
