The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimiah, has paid a courtesy visit to the family of eight-year-old Jalila Abdul Jalil, a Class Two pupil at St. Olives Grammar Boarding School in Dodowa, who was recently abused.
Hon. Zuwera said she was compelled to check on the welfare of the child and her family after ATINKA TV reported the incident. She described the situation as painful and heartbreaking, but expressed relief that Jalila is stable and recovering well following surgery.
The MP assured the family that the matter would be taken seriously in Parliament, with referrals to the Human Rights Committee and the Gender Committee, and a formal briefing to the Speaker of Parliament to ensure proper action.
She emphasised that no teacher or caregiver has the right to abuse children entrusted to their care. The implicated housemistress will be held fully accountable, and the Ministry of Education will be engaged to prevent similar incidents.
Hon. Zuwera also recalled that child abuse had been highlighted during Ghana’s presentation to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, stressing the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children.
The family expressed profound gratitude for the MP’s concern, visit, and commitment to justice, while praying for their daughter’s full recovery.
