The government has cut the sod for the commencement of a 5000- acre Banana farm in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region as part of its One District, One Factory policy.
The project, which will see over 600 locals employed in the first phase, will mainly focus on export according to the District Chief Executive for South Tongu, Louis Emmanuel Agama. He said the district will soon get a Banana processing plant which will process the farm produce for export,
Thomas Moore Zonyrah, District Chief Executive for Central Tongu urged the investors to engage more locals than expatriates since the youth of the district need jobs.
He also asked both locals and investors to live at peace with each to make the area conducive in order to attract more investors to the area.
Togbe Nakakpo also urged the investors to treat the locals with respect and not look down upon them. He also promised on behalf of the Tongu Traditional Council to release land to any investor who wants to invest in the area.
A resident and youth leader of Tefle Kpotame, Kofi Sam said he was very excited about the project since it will create jobs for the youth in the area.
Executives of the company, RADIKAL India, first visited the district to familiarize with the elders and chiefs of the Tongu Traditional area on the 18th August 2018 and promised to come back. They explained that the Banana Processing Plant will process banana into chewing gum and other products for export and for local consumption.
