Stanley Martey hot over water rationing gaffe

The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Joseph Kofi Adda, has directed that the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Stanley Martey be investigated for putting out unauthorized information on an alleged water rationing exercise.

The GWCL began rationing water late January in several parts of the country, assigning reasons including environmental degradation, pollution of water bodies by illegal miners and the dry season.

According to the company, the deeds of illegal miners have derailed its efforts at extracting enough water for treatment, resulting in the inadequate supply of water to consumers.

The Public Relations Officer of GWCL, Mr Stanley Martey, a fortnight ago granted several interviews to the media during which he disclosed that with the exception of the Ashanti and Eastern , all the regions had been affected by the rationing, with the Western Region being the hardest hit.

Mr. Martey indicated that a timetable will soon be put out to guide consumers on when they will get water.

However, speaking Accra based Starr FM last Wednesday, Joseph Kofi Adda, denied reports of water rationing in parts of Ghana and further revealed that the PRO is being investigated for making those unauthorized statements.

“I’m not aware of water rationing, my investigation at Ghana Water says they are not aware. The board is not aware and they have not carried it out to me. It’s something that the PRO said on his own without any consultation with the technical directorate. I’ve instituted investigation into it,” he stressed.

Mr. Adda emphasized that areas suffering water shortages may be due to local fault and must not be misconstrued as a national crisis.

“There could be a problem in the network of the area. It’s not rationing,” the Minister averred.

The rationing has been ongoing for the past two weeks, prompting Parliament to summon management of the Ghana Water Company to answer questions over it.
