The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Ms Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, says the woman who bought the unwholesome chicken at Kumasi confessed she was going to apply Sudan IV dye, ‘suedine’ on the rotten chicken before roasting it for selling.

A woman was arrested for transporting unwholesome chicken in Kumasi on Friday, September 3, 2021.

Through the arrest, 15 cartons of unwholesome chicken were seized at the Adakwame lorry Station-Mbrom in the Ashanti Region.

The rotten chicken was being transported by one Abiba who intended to smoke or roast the chicken for sale within Asuofua, Adakwame and Kejetia.

The suspect, Abiba who was busted by an Officer of the Environmental Health Unit of the KMA led the Environmental Health Officers to arrest the operator of the Coldstore from which the suspect bought the chicken from at Asafo Market.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Ms Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye said,”She said she had been doing the chicken business for a while and so we asked her what she was going to do with the one she bought and she said she will wash it and apply suedine on it before she roasts it and sell it. Maybe it would have been a food colour they use.”

She said although the carton of chicken is between GHC120 to 130, the operator of the coldstore slashed the price to GHC60 for the woman of which she bought about 15 cartons.

When asked what would have happened if the woman was able to sell the rotten chicken to the public for them to consume it, Ms Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye asserted that the chicken would have had a negative effect on those who consume it.

Meanwhile, she said the Food Hygiene Unit of the KMA will go into the market and cold stores to sample such items, confiscate it and arrest those who are found selling such unwholesome products.

The two suspects are however at the Ridge Police Station for further investigations.
