There’s Big Business in Soundtracks – Worlasi

Ghanaian musician and creative entrepreneur, Worlasi, has urged fellow artists to explore the soundtrack industry, describing it as a profitable and less pressurizing venture.

Worlasi has composed soundtracks for several films, including Aloe Vera, The Fisherman, among others.

Speaking on Entertainment Lounge on Atinka TV with Odefour DiAsa Paapa, he shared how he discovered this aspect of the music business and how it has shaped his career.

“I always write about stories, and one day, I received an email from NAFTI students and lecturers who wanted to use my songs for their projects. That’s when I realized there’s serious business here,” he revealed.

According to Worlasi, after this realization, he began receiving calls for similar opportunities, including one from animator Francis A. Brown. “The beautiful thing about the soundtrack business is that there’s no ‘hit song pressure.’ You just have to be creative,” he explained.

Worlasi also emphasized that musicians should treat their craft as a business and not rely solely on the popularity of their songs.

“We can’t say music is better than business or business is better than music because they go hand in hand. The business keeps you running, and the music sustains the business,” he stated. He added that while music brings attention, artists must have strategic plans to turn that attention into income.

When asked about government funding for musicians, Worlasi stressed that artists need to prove the industry’s economic value before seeking financial assistance.

“If we come together with a solid proposal and show that, for instance, this industry generates $200,000 a month and we need $50 million in investment, the government will listen. But if we approach them individually, it won’t work,” he said.

Worlasi’s remarks highlight the need for Ghanaian musicians to explore diverse revenue streams and approach the music business with a strategic mindset.
