VIDEO; Ada: School compound turns refuse dump

A school compound at Koluedor in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region has turned into a refuse dump, beckoning a serious outbreak of filth related ailments.
Teachers and pupils of the private school, Social Impact School have been battling with  bad odour from the growing refuse dump, putting them at the risk of being plagued by insanitary conditions should the problem persist for a little while.
The development has become a major concern to a lot of nearby residents and the authorities of the concerned school.
The refuse dump in question is located on a portion of the school compound, a place which serves as the pupils’ playground.
Not only that, the ugly scene which is about ten metres away from the Ada-Aflao section of the Trans-ECOWAS Highway has also been sited rightly in the middle of a major inner road in the community, making accessibility difficult for vehicles.
Pupils on break were seen escaping from the refuse dump at seeing the news team as they usually do when they see their teachers.
The Unit Committee Secretary for the Koluedor Electoral Area, Raymond Chrapah in an interview with Atinka News said, the worrying situation begun over two months ago when personnel from Zoomlion came for the refuse container and never returned it.
According to him, the waste collection company claims the container was faulty and they were going to work on it and are yet to bring it back, prompting residents to turn the place to a refuse dump without recourse to the health implications on the school children and their teachers.
Mr. Chrapah noted that the stench which emanates from the dump, coupled with the smoke generated when the refuse is burnt put the school children at high risk, saying the situation is a recipe for the outbreak of Cholera, Diarrhoea amongst others, and can possibly claim lives if not attended to immediately.
 



 
Daitey Kofi, Head of Zoomlion workers at Koluedor told Atinka News that he has resulted to burning the refuse sometimes as efforts to get the container back is not yielding any result.
He said he has informed his boss and the Ada West Assembly yet the problem still exists, as the situation seems to be escalating……
