“We have our clients at heart”-MoMo agents on decision to suspend strike

General Secretary for the Mobile Money (MoMo) Agents Association, Evans Otumfour, says the group’s decision to call off their intended strike is a result of the respect and the fact that they have their client’s at heart.

Government introduced E-levy to undertake developmental projects.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday 17th November 2021, Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Attah stated the tax will widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector.

He added that Electronic transactions covering mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments and inward remittances will be charged at an applicable rate of 1.75%, which shall be borne by the sender except inward remittances, which will be borne by the recipient.

“After considerable deliberations, Government has decided to place a levy on all electronic transactions to widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector. This shall be known as the “Electronic Levy or E-Levy. Electronic transactions covering mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments and inward remittances will be charged at an applicable rate of 1.75%, which shall be borne by the sender except inward remittances, which will be borne by the recipient,” Ken Ofori Atta told Parliament.

After the announcement by government, Mobile Money (MoMo) Agents association, who were displeased with the move, threatened to embark on a strike today 23rd December 2021, a move the association has rescinded.

Speaking on the new development in an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, General Secretary for the Mobile Money (MoMo) vendors association, Evans Otumfour stated that the association took into consideration the vital role it plays in the day-to-day activities of their clients hence their decision to call of the strike.

“We agreed to call off the strike due to the respect and sympathy we have for our clients. We know we play a vital role in the lives of our clients other than that we wouldn’t have called off the strike,” General Secretary for the Mobile Money (MoMo) vendors association told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.
