Abass Imoro, the Public Relations officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has dismissed claims that the union has announced a 30 percent adjustment in fares effective September 21.

A statement believed to have come from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on Wednesday, September 14 announced a 30 percent adjustment in fares effective September 21.

“In consultation with our mother body the GPRTU OF TUC, we wish to announce to the general public that there will be a 30% increment on fares starting Tuesday 21st September 2022.”

The letter cited the rise in the cost of fuel and spare parts as the basis for the action

“Due to the increment in fuel products, spare parts, and the poor management of the economy of the government, we are unable to make enough money to cater for our family and pay off our loans.”

“Electricity tariffs, water tariffs, Prices of spare parts, prices of food and Pure water prices have all increased, hence we have no option than to also increase our fares,” the statement added.

But speaking to host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Abass Imoro, the Public Relations officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) said the communique suggesting a 30- percent adjustment in fares effective September 21 is not form their end.

According to him, the proposed 30 percent adjustment in fares is from the concerned Drivers’ Union and not the GPRTU.

“GPRTU is still in talks with stakeholders on an adjustment but this very announcement of a 30 percent adjustment in fares effective September 21 is from the concerned Drivers Union and not from the GPRTU. The executives of GPRTU will meet very soon and if there will be an upward adjustment in fares. It will be announced officially,” he added.
