8 Dead as Illegal Mining Pit collapses at Domi Keniago

At least eight people have died after an illegal mining pit collapsed on miners at Domi Keniago in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at about 9:40 p.m. while the miners were reportedly working inside the pit.

According to reports, 17 miners were trapped following the collapse.

One of the miners, 42-year-old John Paintsil, managed to escape. He reportedly said 12 men were inside the pit when it collapsed.

Rescue teams were deployed to the site to search for those trapped underground. At about 10:48 p.m., the body of one of the victims was recovered.

The rescue operation is expected to continue as authorities work to establish the full number of casualties and the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

The incident has raised renewed concerns about the dangers associated with illegal mining and the need for stronger enforcement of safety measures at mining sites.
