The GJA’s successful bid to host the Convention was announced during the Second African Media Convention which was held in Lusaka, Zambia from 11 – 13 May 2023.

On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, the GJA and Information Ministry launched the third African Media Convention.

At the same event, the 19-Member Local Organizing Committee, Co-Chaired by the GJA President, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour and the Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar was also inaugurated by the Minister of Information to see to the successful execution of the Convention.

The Convention which will be held in Ghana for the first will start from May 15 to May 17 in 2024.

The African Media Convention is currently the largest gathering of media stakeholders and policymakers in the continent.

The Convention, an initiative of The African Editors’ Forum (TAEF) is designed to safeguard the hard-won media freedoms and safety of journalists on the continent. The maiden edition of the Convention was held in Arusha, Tanzania, in 2022.

The Convention brings together media experts, scholars, students, journalists, journalists’ unions and associations, editors, public and private sector, including cooperating partners from around the African continent and beyond as well as representatives from UNESCO and the African Union Commission.

Giving an inaugural speech at the event, the Information Minister, kojo Oppong Nkrumah observed that the industry has been held back for many years because practitioners have not collaborated enough to fashion out and execute solutions.

“The African Media Convention has a refreshing platform that has the potential to change this narrative and lead us to work together to make a significant impact in our industry at the continental level,” he said.

He was also of the view that the convergence of Africa’s media elite here in May next year should give participants the opportunity to among others discuss how to promote a positive African narrative globally which will in turn lead to attracting more positive interests in Africa.

“The African story when told on the global scene is usually a story of failure, corruption and poverty, especially when told by African journalists. While that may be true, there is also a lot of room to tell the African story of success, progress, resilience and excellence and so we are hoping that this convention will be an opportunity where African Media Minds coerce and think through how to promote a positive African narrative globally,” he said.

kojo Oppong Nkrumah also commended the GJA for this feat.

Co-Chair

On behalf of all the Members of the Local Organising Committee for the 3rd African Media Convention, Fatimatu Abubakar expressed their profound gratitude to the Minister of Information and the GJA for the confidence they have in the members.

“We are aware that by this inauguration, you expect nothing less than the provision of top tier infrastructure and services that meet the highest standards of international convention around the world as we showcase our rich Ghanaian culture and robust media landscape. By the Grace of God and with the extensive consultation and collaboration with all industry players, we commit to creating the best cultural experience for participants from the African continent and beyond,” she said.
