Suspend Hotel Increment - Rent Commissioner to Operators

The Rent Commissioner of Ghana, Frederick Opoku, has appealed to directed Hostel operators across the country to temporarily suspend rent adjustments as government engages stakeholders on concerns within the sector.

Speaking on Ghana Nie on Atinka TV hosted by Ama Gyenfa Ofosu-Darkwa and Ekow Budu Sam, Mr. Opoku said recent inspections of some hostels revealed conditions that require urgent attention.

According to him, authorities want to engage hostel owners and operators before any major decisions are taken.

He explained that feedback from stakeholders showed concerns over aggressive enforcement measures, leading the Rent Control Department to adopt a more consultative approach.

Mr. Opoku therefore urged hostel operators to “hold on with the adjustment” while discussions continue.

He stressed that government’s goal is not to intimidate operators but to ensure that hostels operate within the law and provide decent accommodation for students.

The Rent Commissioner added that authorities would continue monitoring hostels nationwide to ensure compliance with registration and operational requirements.
