Ashanti Region: Police Arrest Three for Disrupting NPP Constituency Election in Obuasi

Three persons have been arrested and arraigned before court for allegedly disrupting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Executive Election at Bidieso in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, identified as Haruna Iddrisu, also known as Dole, Osei Boateng, also known as Nana Osei, and Charles Opoku, popularly known as Blackman, were arrested by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command following the incident on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the three suspects allegedly stormed the polling station armed with offensive weapons, causing panic among election officials and delegates.

Police said the suspects scattered ballot boxes and threatened both election officials and voters, disrupting the electoral process.

A reinforcement team from the Police swiftly responded to the scene and arrested the suspects. During the operation, officers retrieved one axe and one cutlass believed to have been used in the incident.

The suspects were subsequently arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court on charges of conspiracy to commit crime, namely rioting with weapons, and rioting with weapons.

They pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The court granted each of the accused persons bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two justified sureties.

The case has been adjourned to August 10, 2026, for further hearing.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says investigations into the incident are ongoing, with efforts underway to identify and arrest other individuals suspected to have played roles in the disruption.

The Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law and order during political activities and assured the public that anyone found to have engaged in acts of violence or intimidation during electoral processes would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
