The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has arrested 93 suspects in a major intelligence-led operation targeting drug trafficking and related criminal activities across the Ashanti Region.
According to a statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit on July 27, 2026, the operation was carried out between July 15 and July 24 in Kumasi, its surrounding communities, and the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality.
The operation targeted several areas identified by the police as criminal hideouts and suspected drug trafficking hubs. These included Afari, Nkawie, Ntobroso, Ahodwo, Ampabame, Atonsu Ahensan, Atonsu Gyinyase, Thinker at Alabar, Asokore Mampong, Sawaba Adinyase, Buobai, Atimatim, Kronum, and Sawaba.
Of the 93 suspects arrested, 58 are men and 35 are women. Sixty-five are Ghanaians, while 28 are Nigerian nationals.
Police identified some of the principal suspects as Nurudeen Gafaru, Abdul Gafaru, Iddrisu Alhassan, also known as “Tagor,” Akwasi Afriyie, and Prince Chidera Okekelawe, a Nigerian national. Investigators believe the suspects are among key figures involved in the illicit narcotics trade in the region.
During the operation, police recovered 40 compressed parcels of suspected narcotics, each weighing approximately one kilogram. Other exhibits retrieved included quantities of Tramadol and Ecstasy tablets, three wraps of suspected cocaine, narcotic-infused beverages, and 30 locally manufactured toffees suspected to contain narcotic substances.
The police also seized an unregistered motorcycle believed to have been used in the distribution of the suspected drugs, along with quantities of unregistered and expired pharmaceutical products.
Preliminary investigations further uncovered suspected commercial sexual exploitation activities at one of the operational sites.
All 93 suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
The Ghana Police Service said the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to dismantle organized criminal networks, curb illicit drug trafficking, and enhance public safety. It assured the public that similar intelligence-led operations will continue across the country.
