Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has dismissed reports suggesting that he is seeking to acquire the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), describing the claims as false and without basis.
The denial follows a demonstration by the VALCO Labour Union, during which some protesters alleged that Mr. Mahama was interested in taking over the state-owned aluminium smelter.
In a statement issued by his Special Aide, Rafik Mahama, Mr. Mahama said he had no interest in acquiring VALCO and had not submitted any offer to purchase the company.
“The attention of Mr. Ibrahim Mahama has been brought to a demonstration held by the Labour Union of VALCO, during which some demonstrators alleged that he is interested in acquiring VALCO. Mr. Ibrahim Mahama has no such interest and has not made any such offer to acquire VALCO,” – the statement said.
The statement described the allegation as the latest in what it called a series of attempts to undermine Mr. Mahama’s reputation and subject him to unnecessary public controversy.
It further stated that the businesses associated with Mr. Mahama have all been established or acquired through lawful means and continue to operate in compliance with the country’s laws.
According to the statement, the continued operation of Mr. Mahama’s businesses through seven election cycles demonstrates their sound management and legal compliance.
The statement added that Mr. Mahama remains committed to contributing to Ghana’s socio-economic development through investments in business opportunities both within the country and abroad.
It also disclosed that Mr. Mahama has instructed his lawyers to commence legal action over what it described as the false publication linking him to the alleged takeover of VALCO.
