The 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) champions, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon), have paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The delegation visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, September 11, 2026, following the school’s historic victory in the 2026 NSMQ Grand Finale.
PRESEC-Legon secured its ninth NSMQ title after defeating two-time champions St. Augustine’s College and Grand Finale debutants Accra Academy in the keenly contested final.
The delegation was led by the Assistant Headmistress of PRESEC-Legon, Mrs Mercy Amoah, and included members of the victorious team, their coaches, school officials and other representatives.
Also present at the meeting were the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, and the Chief Director of the Ministry, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu.
Mr Ablakwa congratulated the students, coaches and school authorities for their achievement, describing the ninth title as a product of hard work, dedication and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
He said PRESEC-Legon’s continued dominance in the competition had become part of the school’s identity and urged the students to maintain the same winning mentality in their future academic and professional pursuits.
The Minister encouraged the students to uphold values including hard work, integrity, diligence and excellence, stressing that these qualities were essential for both individual success and national development.
He also praised the NSMQ for creating a platform for healthy academic competition among schools, saying the quiz encourages students to study harder, challenge themselves intellectually and build confidence in their abilities.
According to him, Ghana’s ability to address challenges such as poverty, corruption and disease would depend on citizens embracing hard work, integrity and excellence.
Mr Ablakwa further conveyed the congratulations of President John Dramani Mahama to PRESEC-Legon, noting that the school’s victory had brought pride to Ghana.
As part of the visit, the Foreign Affairs Minister presented the victorious students with the latest MacBook laptops, while their teachers received HP laptops in recognition of their contribution to the team’s success.
Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu also congratulated PRESEC-Legon and welcomed the delegation to the Ministry.
She highlighted the school’s long-standing tradition of producing accomplished individuals and expressed confidence that the students would grow into future leaders who would contribute to Ghana’s development.
She further encouraged them to consider serving the country through the Foreign Service, emphasising the Ministry’s commitment to nurturing talented young Ghanaians.
Speaking on behalf of the Headmaster, Board of Governors and staff of PRESEC-Legon, Mrs Mercy Amoah expressed appreciation to the Minister for receiving the delegation.
She explained that the delegation had visited the Ministry to formally present the NSMQ trophy and share the school’s achievement with the Minister.
The courtesy call ended with the presentation of the NSMQ trophy to Mr Ablakwa, followed by a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
