The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has rejected allegations of unfair labour practices, intimidation and victimisation against its Director-General, Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur.
The allegations were made by the Ghana Air Traffic Safety Electronics Association (GhATSEA).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 2, the GCAA said the presence of National Security personnel at its facilities was a necessary measure to protect critical aviation infrastructure and ensure the safety of passengers and flight operations.
According to the Authority, the National Labour Commission (NLC) had earlier ruled that an intended industrial action by GhATSEA was illegal and directed the association to use appropriate channels to address its grievances.
The GCAA alleged that despite the ruling, GhATSEA leadership encouraged members to proceed with actions that could affect Communication, Navigation and Surveillance equipment at airports in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and Sunyani.
It said management could not ignore actions that could threaten aviation safety and security.
The Authority therefore maintained that the deployment of security personnel was not intended to intimidate or victimise workers but to protect lives and critical infrastructure.
The GCAA said it respects the rights of employees to raise concerns but stressed that labour actions must not compromise aviation safety.
It assured the travelling public of its commitment to protecting Ghana’s airspace and ensuring the safe operation of the country’s aviation system.
