Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway will significantly reduce travel time between the two major cities, with journeys expected to become 50% shorter.
According to Dr Ato Forson, the expressway will follow an entirely new route, distinguishing it from the existing Accra-Kumasi highway and providing a more efficient connection between the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions.
In a post on social media, the Finance Minister said the new route is expected to transform road travel between Accra and Kumasi by cutting journey times by half.
“The Accra-Kumasi Expressway follows an entirely new route and will ensure journey time is reduced by 50%!” he said.
The project is expected to improve connectivity between some of Ghana’s key economic centres while making the movement of people and goods faster and more efficient.
The Accra-Kumasi corridor is one of the country’s most important road links, serving commuters, businesses, commercial transport operators and freight vehicles travelling between the southern and central parts of Ghana.
A reduction in travel time could therefore have wider benefits for trade and commerce, particularly for businesses that depend on the movement of goods between Accra, Kumasi and communities along the corridor.
The expressway is also expected to ease pressure on existing road infrastructure as traffic continues to increase along the Accra-Kumasi route.
Dr Ato Forson’s announcement forms part of the government’s broader emphasis on infrastructure development and improved road connectivity as a means of supporting economic activity and creating better access between communities.
The Finance Minister did not provide further details on the exact timeline for completion of the expressway in the social media post, but stressed the expected impact of the project on travel between Accra and Kumasi.
If delivered as outlined, the 50% reduction in journey time could represent a major improvement for motorists and transport operators who regularly use the corridor.
