The United States and Ghana have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation.
The Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson, led a delegation on a courtesy call on the Minister for Defence, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, at The Square.
Mr Adjei expressed appreciation for the United States’ continued support for the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly in logistics, institutional development and peacekeeping.
He said the assistance has helped strengthen Ghana’s contribution to United Nations peace operations and broader regional security efforts.
The Defence Minister also highlighted the importance of joint exercises and engagements with US forces, saying they have improved operational readiness, interoperability and personnel resilience.
He stressed the need for continued cooperation and intelligence sharing to address threats including piracy, illegal fishing and cross-border trafficking.
Mr Adjei further commended US support to the Ghana Navy, including the provision of Defender-class boats to improve maritime surveillance, patrol operations and the protection of key trade routes.
He called for expanded US assistance in technology transfer and cyber defence to help Ghana respond to emerging security threats.
Mr Adjei also expressed interest in establishing a specialised drone academy to strengthen surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
In response, Mr Olson reaffirmed the US government’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Ghana’s Defence Ministry and the Ghana Armed Forces.
He said the US would continue supporting Ghana’s democratic stability and peace through stronger security institutions and multinational cooperation.
The two sides also expressed satisfaction with ongoing joint exercises and training exchanges and pledged to deepen cooperation in counter-terrorism and maritime security across the Gulf of Guinea.
