Former Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei-Asare, has called on the government and the Ministry of Education to urgently address challenges affecting the Senior High School (SHS) placement system.
She said students who are yet to secure placement should not be left behind, stressing that access to education remains essential to national development.
Ms Osei-Asare made the call at Anyinam in the Atiwa East Constituency of the Eastern Region when she presented educational materials to support more than 200 students preparing to enter various Senior High Schools.
The items included trunks, mattresses, chop boxes and provisions, while each beneficiary also received GH¢1,000 as transportation support to ease the financial burden on parents.
According to the legislator, parents make significant sacrifices to educate their children, and difficulties in securing SHS placement have added further pressure on families.
She urged the government and relevant authorities to ensure that every qualified student secures placement to continue his or her education.
Ms Osei-Asare also called for a lasting solution to the challenges associated with the placement system to prevent students from being left at home.
Some parents who spoke to the media expressed their concerns about the difficulties they have encountered in securing placement for their children and appealed for urgent action from the authorities.
She said supporting students to transition smoothly into SHS would help reduce the financial and emotional burden on families.
