Horoya Condemns “Ungovernable” Comment, Defends Zongo Community

Hon. Ismaila Ali Horoya, aspiring National Zongo Caucus Coordinator and Coordinator of the NDC Greater Accra Zongo Caucus, has strongly condemned recent comments by the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, describing them as reckless and dangerous.

In a statement issued on Monday, Horoya took issue with remarks allegedly suggesting that the country could be made “extremely ungovernable,” insisting that such comments undermine Ghana’s democratic stability and unfairly drag the Zongo community into partisan tensions.

“As a fellow Zongo man, I find these remarks unacceptable and deeply offensive,” he stated. “Politicians who invoke the Zongo identity to advance threats or intimidate are misrepresenting our community and undermining Ghana’s democratic values.”

Horoya called on Salam Mustapha to retract the statement immediately and publicly dissociate the Zongo community from what he described as “dangerous rhetoric.”

According to him, Zongo communities across the country have consistently championed peace, unity, and democratic participation, and should not be associated with threats of instability or political intimidation.

“The Zongo people have always upheld peace, unity, and democratic engagement. No political actor has the right to weaponize our community or involve us in threats against governance,” he stressed.

The NDC Greater Accra Zongo Caucus leader also appealed to the government and security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure accountability for any comments capable of inciting unrest.

He reaffirmed his commitment to promoting responsible political discourse and protecting the integrity and reputation of the Zongo community.

“I remain steadfast in my commitment to protecting the integrity of the Zongo community, promoting responsible political participation, and ensuring that our voices continue to contribute positively to Ghana’s democracy,” the statement added.

The comments come amid heightened political tensions ahead of Ghana’s upcoming electoral activities, with stakeholders continuing to call for restraint and issue-based political engagement.

Bawumia: “The Mighty Minority” Has Been The Last Line Of Defense For Ghanaians In 17 Months

New Patriotic Party Flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid an emotional and effusive tribute to the NPP’s Minority Caucus in Parliament, hailing the group as the “last line of defence and glimmer of hope” for Ghanaians in the seventeen months since the party lost power in the December 2024 general elections.

Addressing the Caucus at a pre-Parliament session briefing, Dr Bawumia offered an extended commendation of the MPs for their service under difficult opposition conditions and said the accolade of “The Mighty Minority” which had grown around them was fully earned.

“In the last 17 months, when all has been said and done, you have been the last line of defence and glimmer of hope for the Ghanaian. You have stood and defended our nation and party to everyone’s admiration.”

More Than A Numbers Game

The Flagbearer was emphatic that the Minority’s significance extended far beyond the numerical count of seats the NPP occupies on the parliamentary floor.

In a pointed message designed to bolster the morale of MPs who have operated under an opposition majority constraint since January 2025, he said the Caucus represented something far larger: the parliamentary face of hope for millions of Ghanaians who still believe in the NPP.

“Do not underestimate your place in this moment,” he told the assembled legislators.

“In opposition, the Minority Caucus is not a spectator. You are the first line of accountability, the first line of policy scrutiny, and the first line of reassurance to citizens who are beginning to ask whether the promises made to them were carefully thought through or merely crafted for campaign applause and deception.”

Reassurance at a Critical Political Moment

Dr Bawumia contextualised his commendation within the broader political moment, noting that Ghana was at what he described as a very critical intersection of its political history.

He observed that the NDC administration’s honeymoon period was wearing off and that real questions were beginning to emerge from broader Ghanaian society about the administration’s delivery record.

He noted that previously silent voices were now beginning to speak up and join in holding the government to account — a development he framed as an opportunity for the Minority to amplify its impact beyond Parliament and into the general public consciousness.

A Personal Pledge to MPs

Beyond the commendation, Dr Bawumia made a personal commitment to the Minority Caucus that his support would not be occasional or ceremonial.

He pledged to be available to engage directly with MPs, to listen, to assist with policy direction, to support messaging, and to stand with them when the parliamentary work became difficult.

“I believe in this Caucus. I believe in your intellect, your courage, your experience, your political instincts and above all your love for NPP and Ghana,” he said. “I have seen you stand firm when the party needed a voice, and I want you to know that I do not take your sacrifices for granted.”

He also used the platform to condemn the recent arrests, harassment, and intimidation of NPP activists and communicators, calling on Minority MPs to serve as constitutional shields for every Ghanaian whose freedom of expression is under threat, regardless of party affiliation.

The Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has publicly accused some state actors of worsening the protracted Bawku chieftaincy conflict, describing the situation as a serious abuse of power and injustice against the Mamprusi people.

Addressing a rare press conference at the Nayiri Palace in Nalerigu, the Nayiri condemned what he described as the maltreatment of Mamprusis and the handling of the conflict by state authorities.

According to him, the mediation process led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, which initially offered hope for peace and reconciliation, has instead resulted in deeper division, mistrust, and insecurity in the area.

The Nayiri also expressed concern over the arrest and continued detention of Bawku Naa Sheriga, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, which he claimed was based on a flawed mediation outcome.

He argued that no Ghanaian should be forcibly displaced or removed from their ancestral home for political reasons.

The Mamprugu overlord is therefore calling on the government and state institutions to facilitate the immediate return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre to Bawku.

Speaking during the press conference, Naa Kpatidana Ben Bukari stressed that Mamprugu remains one of the oldest and most enduring kingdoms in the history of Ghana.

He noted that successive Nayiris have consistently exercised restraint to prevent the Bawku conflict from escalating into a wider ethnic confrontation.

According to him, various ethnic groups, including Kusasis, continue to coexist peacefully throughout the greater Mamprugu-Zozugu area because the Nayiri believes all residents deserve protection, justice, and dignity regardless of ethnicity.

The traditional leadership further stated that the Nayiri has on several occasions advised successive governments on practical approaches to achieving lasting peace in the Bawku Traditional Area.

They maintained that the proposals submitted by the Nayiri are well documented and should be seriously considered if the government is genuinely committed to ending the conflict.

The Nayiri consequently called on the Government of Ghana, the international community, civil society organisations, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and human rights institutions to urgently pay attention to developments surrounding the Bawku crisis.

Let’s Position Ourselves Credibly as a Party Preparing to Govern in 2029-Bawumia to Minority

New Patriotic Party Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a clear and forceful signal to his party’s Minority Caucus in Parliament: the period of internal recovery from the 2024 election defeat is over, and the NPP must now present itself to Ghana as a credible government-in-waiting.
Speaking at a pre-Parliament briefing with Minority MPs on the eve of the resumption of the Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament, Dr. Bawumia told the assembled legislators that the country is watching closely and that the next phase of the NPP’s trajectory would be defined by how it conducts itself in the Chamber and beyond.

“We have finished the period of introspection. We must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from 7th January 2029.”

Dr. Bawumia was emphatic that the Minority must no longer see itself as a wounded party licking its wounds, but as a disciplined parliamentary force ready to lead. He argued that from this session onward, every action taken in the House, every statement made to the press, and every engagement held in constituencies must be guided by a single question in the minds of ordinary Ghanaians: “Can I trust the NPP to run my country again?”

A Party Rebuilding Its Mandate
The flagbearer acknowledged that the NPP’s return to power in 2029 would not come easily, and warned against complacency or fragmentation within the Caucus. He reminded MPs of the party’s foundational achievements in government, including the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Free Senior High School policy, the School Feeding Programme, and the Youth Employment Programme, and urged them to own and project that legacy with confidence.

“We must always project this posture, that we are a party preparing to govern,” he told the MPs. “This will send a strong and well-meaning message to the people of Ghana and emphasize our belief that it is only the NPP that can move this nation on a glorious path.”

Direct Support Pledged
In a commitment that underscored the seriousness of his engagement, Dr. Bawumia pledged to be personally and actively involved in supporting the Caucus to achieve its parliamentary objectives. He disclosed that the broader party was also building a strong institutional architecture through sector committees to ensure that the NPP speaks with a unified and coordinated strategy at all times.

“I will be directly involved in supporting you to achieve this,” he told MPs. “The entire party is also building a strong architecture to support you through the sector committees, so that we sing from the same hymn sheet and act with a coordinated strategy at every point in time.”

The address marks one of the Flagbearer’s most substantive public engagements with the parliamentary wing of the party since winning the NPP’s presidential primary, and is expected to set the tone for the Minority’s approach in the weeks and months ahead.

Cape Coast MCE Warns Against Illegal Sand Winning

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Cape Coast, George Justice Arthur, has warned that the Assembly will intensify public education and take strong action against illegal sand winning in the metropolis.

Speaking in a one-on-one interview in response to a report by Ebenezer Madugu on sand winning around Cape Coast, especially near the government’s sea defence project area, the MCE said the practice poses a threat to the environment and coastal protection efforts.

Mr. Arthur stated that the Assembly will “go hard” on educating residents about the dangers of sand winning, particularly in sensitive areas where government is investing to protect the coastline from erosion.

He explained that the sea defence project is meant to safeguard lives, property and public infrastructure, and activities such as uncontrolled sand winning could undermine its purpose.

He added that enforcement teams will be encouraged to act when necessary, but stressed that education will be the first step to help people understand the long-term effects of sand winning.

The MCE assured the public that the Assembly will continue to work to protect Cape Coast’s coastline and environment.

GSA Arrests Two Chinese Managers, Shuts Down Mattress and Furniture Company Over Substandard Products

0

The Ghana Standards Authority has arrested two Chinese nationals and shut down a mattress and furniture manufacturing company near Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region over the alleged use of substandard materials in production.

The operation forms part of an ongoing nationwide exercise by the Authority to clamp down on factories and companies producing goods that fail to meet approved standards.

According to the GSA, the operation by its Greater Accra Regional Office followed intelligence indicating that some manufacturing companies previously closed down for non-compliance with standards certification were still secretly operating.

During the exercise, officials visited 5A Homes, a furniture and mattress manufacturing company near Dawhenya, where two managers of the company were arrested to assist with investigations.

Preliminary findings reportedly revealed that the company was still producing mattresses using substandard materials despite previous regulatory concerns.

Speaking to the media after the operation, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the GSA, Clement Kubati, expressed concern about the activities of some manufacturers producing inferior products for the Ghanaian market.

The enforcement team later proceeded to the China Mall in Ashaiman, where officials confiscated several allegedly substandard mattresses and electrical bulbs linked to the affected manufacturing companies operating within the Dawhenya enclave.

Mr. Kubati stated that the low-quality products discovered on the market posed risks to consumers and misled unsuspecting buyers. The Ghana Standards Authority also disclosed plans to pursue legal action against individuals and managers found culpable, including the imposition of fines and other sanctions under the law.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring that products manufactured and sold in Ghana meet approved safety and quality standards.

FDA tightens checks on frozen food imports

Source: Mavis Fantevi

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has intensified regulatory measures on imported frozen chicken, meat, and fish, engaging importers as part of a nationwide effort to strengthen food safety controls in Ghana.

The Authority said all importers of frozen food products are now required to undergo mandatory site verification processes before their goods are approved for distribution on the local market.

The exercise is intended to ensure that products originate from facilities that meet acceptable hygiene and safety standards.

According to the Food and Drugs Authority, the inspections form part of its broader mandate to protect public health by preventing unsafe or substandard food products from entering the country.

The FDA noted that verification checks help confirm that production and storage environments abroad comply with international food safety requirements.

The regulator further explained that the initiative will enhance traceability within the frozen food supply chain, allowing authorities to better monitor the source and handling of imported products from origin to distribution.

The FDA stressed that ensuring food safety remains a top priority, adding that protecting consumers begins with strict monitoring and enforcement across all entry points of the food import system.

Importers have been urged to fully cooperate with the verification process to avoid delays and ensure compliance, as the Authority continues its efforts to safeguard public health and improve confidence in food products on the Ghanaian market.
