The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Cape Coast, George Justice Arthur, has warned that the Assembly will intensify public education and take strong action against illegal sand winning in the metropolis.
Speaking in a one-on-one interview in response to a report by Ebenezer Madugu on sand winning around Cape Coast, especially near the government’s sea defence project area, the MCE said the practice poses a threat to the environment and coastal protection efforts.
Mr. Arthur stated that the Assembly will “go hard” on educating residents about the dangers of sand winning, particularly in sensitive areas where government is investing to protect the coastline from erosion.
He explained that the sea defence project is meant to safeguard lives, property and public infrastructure, and activities such as uncontrolled sand winning could undermine its purpose.

The MCE noted that the Assembly is committed to ensuring that development projects in the area are protected, adding that public cooperation is needed to stop harmful activities along the coast.
He urged residents to support the Assembly and report individuals engaged in illegal sand winning.
According to him, the Assembly will not allow the sea defence project and other government interventions in Cape Coast to be destroyed through irresponsible activities.
He added that enforcement teams will be encouraged to act when necessary, but stressed that education will be the first step to help people understand the long-term effects of sand winning.
The MCE assured the public that the Assembly will continue to work to protect Cape Coast’s coastline and environment.
