The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, 7th March, 2018, at the Flagstaff House, swore in three new Ambassadors, who are to safeguard and promote the image and interests of Ghana outside her shores.

They are Mr. Frank Okyere, Ghana’s Ambassador to Japan; Eric Odoi-Anim, Ghana’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe; and Mrs Amma Adomaa Twum-Amoah, Ghana’s Ambassador to Ethiopia.

Reminding the Ambassadors about their roles, President Akufo-Addo told the three envoys and High Commissioners that they must bear in mind the fact that they have a responsibility of preserving and promoting the image of a country whose reputation amongst the comity of nations is high.

President Akufo-Addo told the new envoys that his government has made it a policy to seek more private sector equity financing for infrastructure projects.

This, he added, means that the new envoys have a responsibility to drive private sector investment into Ghana.

The President admonished them to work closely with the Ministries and Agencies in Ghana whose role it is to generate investment in the country, urging them to remember vividly the slogans of the government’s flagship programmes, 1-District-1-Factory; 1-Village-1-Dam; Planting for Food and Jobs.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo advised the 3 new envoys to develop cordial working relations with the professional Foreign Service officers they will find at their duty posts, and also with members of the Ghanaian communities in their respective countries.

“Ghana is on very good and cordial terms with all the countries to which you have been posted. Our bilateral relations span several decades, and our ties of co-operation remain strong. Your role is to deepen these even further, as well as explore other areas of effective co-operation, which will inure to the mutual benefit of our respective populations,” President Akufo-Addo added.

Let’s develop ourselves; the only way to be relevant – Otiko charges women

Ghana is part of many countries across the globe gearing up for the celebration of the International Women’s Day slated Thursday March 8.

It is a global day for celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

In Ghana, women continue to play second fiddle to men in terms of governance and decision making, access to education as well as land rights issues.

For instance, statistics on Gender Inequalities in Rural Employment in Ghana, 2012 by the Gender, Equity and Rural Employment Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), overall literacy rate for women is 46% as compared to 67% for men.

Also, extremely high percentage of women have not completed primary education. In rural areas, access to secondary education for women and men remains low; where the share of men and women is 13% AND 3% respectively.

It is in this vein that the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), Otiko Afisa Djaba, called on all women, both old and young to cultivate the culture of self-development as that is the optimal way of being relevant in today’s men domineering society.

And that even though they continue to struggle with men for space and opportunities, there are a lot of prospects to be tapped and made use of by women. “Women too must press for progress,” she said.

She mentioned, “We must fight for their rights, however, if these rights are available and we are not able to develop then it is our attitude”. Therefore, all ladies should respect and develop themselves.

The onus lies on women to feed and cater for their wards and not allow the children to be abused by people particularly men.

Gender Minister made this call when she brought women from all fields of endeavor for rally at the Independence Square to commemorate the International Women’s Day under the auspices of the Gender Ministry.

Present at the occasion were the women leaderships of all political parties, women from the Christian and Muslim societies, women from Civil Society, AGLOW, Academia, school girls, head potters (Kayayeis)

According her, with 61 years of Independence, there should be paradigm shift in our approach to solving abuses and gender-based issues. She admonished that we put a stop to rape and defilement as well as men impregnating teenage girls.

“Bank lending rates must be reduced” – Akufo-Addo

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has appealed to banks to reduce their interest rates so as to compliment the efforts being made by his government to create a more stable macro-economic framework in the country.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the first year of his administration has witnessed fiscal discipline being maintained, with fiscal deficit reducing from 9.3% in 2016 to 5.6% in 2017. The projection, this year, he said, is that fiscal deficit will reduce to 4.5%.

“We have seen inflation decline from 15.6% in 2016 to 11.8% in 2017, and, now, at the end of January, 10.3%. The Monetary Policy Rate has also been falling from 25.5% in 2016 and now stands at 20%. The 91-day Treasury bill rate has also been falling from 16.4% in 2016 and now stands at 13.4%,” the President said.

However, President Akufo-Addo noted that banking lending rates still remained high, averaging between 31.7% and 29.3% within the same period.

“The gap between what is happening to the decline in inflation, and the lending rates being charged by the private sector, is a gap we have to bridge. And, if we are to give substantial complement to the vision that we all share, as a Ghana free and globally competitive economy, my challenge to you is to complement the efforts of my government, which is creating a more stable macro-economic framework, by bringing down lending rate,” he said.

The President continued, “I have said that I am in a hurry. I am in a hurry because the Ghanaian people are also in a hurry to see an improvement in the quality of their lives and, therefore, if we are ready to give an impetuous to the private sector in our country, lending rates must come down. And they need to come down as a matter of urgency.”

President Akufo-Addo made this known on Wednesday, 7th March, 2018, when he commissioned the $60 million new Ghana Head Office of Ecobank, in Accra.

The President stated that a strong commitment from a bank like Ecobank, “a leading bank in our country”, to tackle the anomaly of high bank lending rates “would be a very good signal to the others”.

He noted that a reduction in lending rates “would be the way we can grow our private sector, and enable it to create jobs and with all the other linkages, to grow into an enhancement of our general prosperity. So my challenge is for you to look at reducing lending rate as quickly as possible.”

President Akufo-Addo assured that a positive response to his appeal from banks would ensure that “I will definitely lend my voice to an improved banking culture that ensures that people pay back their loans.”

The President congratulated the promoters, the management and Board of Directors of EcoBank for the tremendous strides that have made over the years, typified by this new Ghana Head Office.

He noted that even though the Ecobank is a major pan African bank, the Ghanaian entity is the most profitable within the pan African context.

How to argue constructively in a relationship? 8 tips

0

There is no such thing as a couple that doesn’t fight from time to time. After all, we are different people and no matter how close and in harmony we feel with our significant other, there will always be things on which our opinions will differ. That’s healthy, we can’t think identically. It gets unhealthy when you start arguing all the time and that’s usually an indication that the relationship is going downhill and fast. Here are some tips for those who don’t argue all the time but feel bad when they do fight with their boo.

SO HOW TO CONSTRUCTIVELY FIGHT WITH YOUR PARTNER?
1. COMMUNICATE OPENLY
Ah, the silent treatment, that wonderful passive-aggressive weapon that some of us love to use so much. It may work on a small child who’s been naughty but you better not deploy it in arguments with your partner. Whenever you feel a conflict bubbling, don’t turn your back, take the opportunity to thrash things out. The calmer the better, of course, but we don’t always achieve this state of calm argument, so live with it, just don’t shut up. open and sincere communication is a true key to a healthy and happy relationship.

2. ALWAYS TREAT YOUR PARTNER WITH RESPECT

We often tend to exaggerate problems we have, and fights follow. First of all, be prepared that there will be fights, no matter how much you love each other. So, remind yourself that this will not be the last discussion you’ll ever have but at the same time it won’t be the end of your relationship, therefore, remember to always treat your partner with respect and love, even during those times when you don’t agree with each other. Needless to say, try to avoid arguing over insignificant stuff or if you have already got into a fight, try to end it as quickly and as peacefully, as possible.
3. EXERCISE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
When we get angry – reason steps out and emotion reigns supreme. This is where emotional intelligence comes into play. Being smart and being intelligent are two different things. Emotions can be really tricky and you could hurt someone in the heat of the moment, unintentionally, therefore, try to be fully present and mindful of your words and actions. Bear that in mind when you and your partner are starting to disagree and you’re gearing up for a huge argument. Disagreement is fine, but acting with the lack of love and respect towards each other is not, and once spoken words cannot be taken back, even if you didn’t really mean them, so be mindful, present and emotionally intelligent.

4. REMEMBER THAT THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION
Most of us love to have the last word in an argument, which is a a very unhealthy habit that can make a small discussion, that would otherwise have been over in ten minutes, drag on for days, just so that one of partners can have the last word. An argument, however heated it may be, is not a competition, repeat this to yourself before you say: “Yes, but you said…” in an attempt to get on top of your opponent and stay there, claiming some imaginary victory. A healthy communication is when two loving people look for a compromise and harmony. The true winner in an argument is the one who first finds an intelligent way towards a harmonious resolving of the situation.

5. KEEP YOUR COOL AND REMAIN CONSTRUCTIVE, AS MUCH AS YOU CAN
Nobody, even the most eloquent and persuasive person would get themselves better understood if they raise their voice. Nobody. Never. Think about how you feel when somebody is shouting at you. Do you feel at your most receptive? Hardly. When we are being shouted at, we shut down and want to run away, we literally become incapable of thinking clearly about whatever is being shouted at us. And, of course, we start shouting ourselves, and there goes any chance for a peaceful resolution. So, always keep your cool and remain constructive (not destructive), as much as you can.

6. BE READY TO ADMIT YOUR FAULTS QUICKLY
A fight is something that can happen between two people, or, if you like, it takes two to argue. So, whenever you feel like having a little argument with your loved one, promise yourself that you will be ready to admit your faults and say sorry, if you are in the wrong. It’s human to make mistakes, including ones that start a fight. Readiness to apologise is an invaluable quality and you should be proud to be strong enough to apologise first. So, if you did start the argument, don’t try to steer things in the direction of blaming your partner, be mature and admit it was you. It may very well end the whole fight then and there.

7. LISTEN LIKE YOU MEAN IT

Ok, an argument implies you mostly talk but remind yourself to listen to your partner’s side of the story toon and when you listen – try to really hear. Besides having simple good manners to be gracious enough to really understand what someone else has to say, it will also give you time to perhaps cool off a bit, thus avoiding emotional explosions. Then try to accept that his viewpoint differs from yours, and this is okay. You can’t change how the other person feels about the situation, but when you are really present and you listen, you can easier come up with a harmonious compromise.

8. LEAVE THE ARGUMENT IN THE PAST AND NEVER TRY TO RESURRECT IT
Sometimes it’s all too tempting to fall back on old fights, and use them as the arguments for a new one. This, however, is one of the temptations we all should learn to be wise enough to resist. It’s unproductive, to say the least, and it makes it look like you’ve been holding grudges during all this time. Is that how you want to look in the eyes of your significant other? Leave old arguments in the past, where they belong. Then kiss, make up and be happy again.

Prostitute sparks frenzy at hotel by posting ‘free sex’ ad and room number

0

A 19-year-old Chinese blogger was nabbed after offering up free sex online — drawing throngs of horndogs to the hotel in China where she was staying, according to reports.

Ye Mouyi put out the sex ad last Thursday via the social media site Weibo and WeChat in which she included her room number at the Hilton Hotel in Sanya City, the southernmost tip of China’s Hainan province, local news website iFeng reported.

“Somebody come get me … Sex … for free … 6316,” Mouyi wrote in the message, which quickly went viral, along with a video of her in a bikini, according to News.com.au.

According to iFeng, a horde of people descended on the hotel, with many calling up the front desk to inquire about the guest in Room 6316.

The Hilton Hotel quickly called police, who responded to the scene.

By the time authorities arrived, Mouyi had already checked out of the hotel and had staff escort her from the premises, according to iFeng.

The next day, Mouyi was arrested at Sanya Phoenix International Airport on prostitution charges, according to the report.

She was fined $79 and was ordered to remain jailed through March 15.

30% tariff reduction not enough, scrap VAT – GFL to gov’t

The General Secretary for the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has asked the Akufo Addo administration to scrap the Value Added Tax (VAT) in its quest to assist industries.

According to him, there are equally important taxes that need to be scraped or reduced, adding that a reduction in  electricity tariffs is not enough.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has announced a general reduction in electricity tariffs effective March 15, 2018.

Residential customers per the new tariff cuts are to enjoy a 17.5% reduction, while non-residential customers will see tariffs cut by 30%.

Those in the mining sector have also been given a 10% tariff cut, and 25% cut for Special Load Tariff Customers (LV, MV & HV).

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Abraham Koomson stated that the removal of other taxes plus the reduction in electricity tariffs will  help cushion industries against huge production cost.

“The international markets have provided favorable environment for their industries to operate. If the government wants the industries to compete with the international markets, then they should provide such conditions,” he added.

ADB suspended from Ghana Stock Exchange over 'purported takeover'

0

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has temporarily suspended the ADB Bank from trading pending a clarification on the "purported takeover" of the indigenous lender by its counterpart, UniBank.

The suspension takes immediate effect.

A circular from the GSE said the suspension is in line with Section 7 of the GSE Automated Trading Rules (ATS).

Following reports of the takeover, the circular said "the Managing Director of the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), (Mr Kofi Yamoah), in consultation with the Chairman of the GSE Council, has suspended trading in the shares of ADB effective March 7, 2018.

"This is to allow the GSE clarify news on a purported take-over of ADB.

"The investing public will be duly informed of the outcome and resumption of trading in the shares of ADB," it concluded.

The suspension in the trading of ADB on the GSE followed news reports that key shareholders of the bank, led by Belstar Capital, had pledged their shares and voting rights, among others to UniBank Ghana Limited.

This meant that uniBank, an indigenous lender, had been given rights of ownership of ADB, which was a state-owned bank until it was listed on the GSE in 2016.

Meanwhile, Graphic Online can confirm that the central bank will denounce the transaction as null and void later today, Wednesday march 7.
