Nana Addo erred in asking Sulemana’s Deputy to act– Expert

A Director at the  Institute of Governance, Professor Kusi Asiamah, says President Akufo -Addo should not have asked the Deputy Upper West Regional Minister to act after the Regional Minister's suspension.

President Nana Akufo-Addo yesterday ordered the immediate suspension of the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan, for his role in Wednesday’s disturbances at the Regional NADMO office.

The Minister reportedly ordered the police to release some persons believed to be NPP thugs who had been arrested for attacking the regional NADMO office and destroying public property in the process.

The presidency in a statement on Thursday asked the Minister to proceed on suspension while the disturbance at the Upper West Regional NADMO office Wednesday is been investigated.

Speaking on Atinka AM Drive with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, A Director at Institute of governance, Professor Kusi Asiamah, explained that the president should have  directed  another  Minister  to  act  instead.

According to him, there is a vast difference between the duties of a regional Minister and that of a deputy regional Minister.

” I would agree with the Minority on this one, I think the duties of the Regional Minister should have been added to that of either the Northern Regional Minister or the Upper East Regional Minister other than his deputy,” he added.

Migrant crisis: 90 feared drowned off Libyan coast

0

Ninety migrants are feared drowned after a boat capsized off the Libyan coast, says the UN's migration agency.

Three survivors said most of those who drowned were Pakistani nationals.

Libya has for years been a major transit route for migrants trying to reach southern Europe by sea.

But last year the EU reached a controversial deal to provide help to the Libyan coastguard in order to stop the flow of boats carrying migrants and refugees to Italy.

Aid agencies and the UN accused European governments of taking an "inhuman" approach.

"Ten bodies are reported to have washed up on Libyan shores," the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement.

A spokesperson said Pakistanis were increasingly trying to make the perilous crossing to Italy.

While Pakistanis were 13th on a list of the number of migrants trying to reach Europe last year by nationality, so far this year they are third, said the IOM.

Overall this year, the IOM reports that there have been 6,624 arrivals by sea to Europe, compared to 5,983 in the same period of 2017. So far in 2018, 246 migrants are believed to be dead or missing.

Libyans aboard
Unusually, there were also Libyans among the dead and survivors of the shipwreck, reports the BBC's North Africa correspondent Rana Jawad.

The Facebook page of the security directorate in the coastal city of Zuwara, where the bodies washed up, said a Libyan woman had drowned, but that, of the three survivors, two were Libyan nationals.

Libyans rarely attempt the dangerous and illegal boat journey from their country to southern Europe.

Some cases of illegal Libyan migration were documented last year, but they usually involved sturdier boats that were carrying few people.

The latest deaths come just after the EU border agency Frontex announced the launch of Operation Themis on Thursday.

Unlike its previous mission, known as Triton, migrants rescued at sea will now be taken to the country that is co-ordinating the rescue, rather than just Italy.

Sacrifice top officials who promote vigilantism – Prof Gyampo to Akufo Addo

0

Senior lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has called for the culture of sacrificing top gov’t and public officials who fall foul of the law in the country.

His submission is in support of the immediate action taken by President Nana Addo Danakwa Akufo Addo in suspending the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan for his alleged shielding of some party hooligans.

“with the level of impunity in the country, unless we sacrifice some top officials – be it REGSEC Chairman like the suspended Regional Minister, the President ought to dismiss such characters.  The  IGP and other security gurus  must  understand that the President has shown a clear way and determination to let the law deal with law breakers”, he noted.

According to him, this whole issue of vigilantism and party foot soldiers found its ugly head in the country somewhere in 2001 and since then successive governments have paid mere lip service to fighting the canker.

Prof. Gyampo also commended the President for the bold decision taken, but recommended stiffer punishment against the minister if found guilty after investigations.

But moving forward, he mentioned that we must not condone lawlessness and impunity particularly as we have climbed higher the ladder of democratic progression – as it retards our growth and development.

However, personal aide to the suspended minister, Issah A. Kpegla Jnr. Speaking to Ofori Ayim on Atinka FM’s “Simpieso” categorically denied any directive from Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan purported to have freed the perpetuators from arrest was untrue.

According to him, the rampaging  youth submitted that the NADMO Coordinator, Isaac Seidu who doubles as Regional Organizer, was the Electoral Officer in the constituency and denied their candidate from contesting in the polling station elections of the NPP party.

And that, it was the leadership of the agitated youth who was present and not the culprits at the time the police came. Thus, the police after interrogation and gathering of their fact, they all agreed to let them go and report on Thursday, Feb 1, which they did.

Therefore, under no circumstances did Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan aid the release of the culprits.

“Take advantage of vacant political positions” – NPP aspirant charges youth

0

An aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency secretary for the  Ablekuma North Constituency, Frederick Green, has charged the youth of Ghana to take charge of the political leadership of Ghana.

According to him  this need has never been more critical than now when the youth  are at the bottom of the socio economic  ladder as they have for far too long been conveniently ignored by the powers  that be  whom themselves are amassing the wealth of the country’s resources  for self-aggrandizement.

In a press conference, Frederick  Green who once contested for  the Greater Accra  Council of state  representative said despite the youth been in the majority of Ghana’s population ,it has a high dependency ration ,something that is embarrassing and shameful for a country as Ghana that is endowed with magnificent resources.

“The youth are at the prime of their lives and the most energetic ,vibrant and innovative  demographic group in our population and have  to adequately benefit from the country’s  resources”.
He further stated that the youth of Ghana are uncaring nation with uncaring leadership ,that would rather enrich itself than to provide the youth with opportunities to be wealthy as well.

“A country with a potential for opportunities would at least provide these to a group that has the future ahead of them, no wonder quite a number of them end up hiding away their anguish in drugs and alcohol-but there is always hope”.

The NPP scribe hopeful  who was the youngest contestant  in the Council of state  elections , is of the view that  this time the youth of Ghana do not need to use AK 47 and daggers ,but though democratic and vigorous campaigns ,they can also attain majority rule in Ghana –because those in power and selfishly benefiting from the country’s wealth will never deliver it on a silver platter.

He says the youth have to demand real majority rule in Ghana by participating in the politics of the country.

”Waiting around for someone to do it for you, has never worked and will never work”. He stated.

Speaking on his motivation to contest for the Ablekuma North NPP secretary position, Frederick Green said it has always been his ambition to be in political office to galvanize  the youth  of the country  to take charge of their life .

Happy Sunshine streamlines operations to meet EPA requirement

0

Happy Sunshine Company Limited, a tomato paste manufacturing firm, is embarking on several activities to address some environmental concerns raised by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Happy Sunshine, which operates at Kutunse in the Ga West Municipality, was directed by the EPA to halt operations due to some environmental concerns.

The EPA asked the company to embark on some facelift projects and also engage the community to secure their consent and support before any production commences.

As part of efforts to integrate the community into its operations, Happy Sunshine organized a community durbar in accordance with EPA directives.

The durbar was attended by the Chief of Kuntunse and his elders, opinion leaders, the clergy, representatives of the security services as well as residents of Kuntunse.

Mars Du, Managing Director of Happy Sunshine, affirmed his company’s commitment to investing in Ghana and the readiness of Happy Sunshine to support the government in its efforts to bridge the unemployment gap.

“it is also the vision of Happy Sunshine to boost the industrialization drive of Ghana and support the government’s one-district-one factory policy.   This, is evident in the establishment of a high-tech ultra-modern manufacturing plant to produce highly nutritious and tasty tomato paste for the Ghanaian market by Happy Sunshine Company limited,” he said.

The chief of Kuntunse, Nii Noi Nortey, used the occasion to plead with the government and the EPA to as a matter of urgency allow the company to resume operations since Happy Sunshine has worked on all the environmental concerns raised.

Nii Noi Nartey was of the view that, many of his young people who were employed by the company have since the closure been unemployed and this is creating so much economic hardship for his people.

In a bid to meet the requirements of the EPA before final approval, Happy Sunshine has embarked on a number of reforms including refitting of the factory’s chimneys by increasing its length as required by the EPA to prevent any direct emissions into the community.

The company has also constructed a water waste management facility to properly manage liquid waste emanating from the operations of the factory.

Additionally, upon the directive of the EPA, the company has acquired a tract of land directly opposite the factory to serve as customer parking space. The environmental improvement projects embarked upon by the company also include the covering of drainage facilities, and increasing the factory’s wall to keep within bounds any noise generated by the factory.

Residents of Kuntunse have expressed happiness with the company’s reforms and are further assured of their safety. This was evident in the show of overwhelming endorsement by members of the community for the factory to be sited in the Kuntunse community.

The company has since satisfied all statutory requirements to regularize their operations including receiving approval from the Food and Drugs Authority, The Ghana Standards Authority, The registrar General’s department among many others.
