Ras Mubarak: “I’ve only one wife; my first wife divorced me two weeks to election”

0

Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu in the Northern Region, Ras Mubarak, has asked the public to ignore reports that, he has married a second wife.

Ras Mubarak married daughter of Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak in Kumasi over the weekend, but reports suggested that the new bride was his second wife.

However, the lawmaker in a Facebook post Monday, disputed the claims, saying he has only one wife.

Ras Mubarak posted:

“… “I've just woken up to news that I married an additional wife yesterday. Let me put it on record that – though I am unapologetically a believer in polygamy and my religion, and my proud Dagbon tradition and culture permit polygamy, – I just remarried yesterday after my wife then, packed out and sued for divorce a few weeks before the 2016 election.

While we appreciate the media interest in reporting what is news, we wish to encourage the media to report what is factual. Mrs. Huseina Mubarak, – my new and only wife – and I, are very grateful to colleagues from the NDC and NPP, friends, family and everyone who supported us in diverse ways.

According to reports, the  new wife of the former Reggae presenter is a student nurse at the Tamale Nursing and Midwifery College.

GCB Bank completes integration of ex UT and Capital Banks

0

GCB Bank has successfully completed the full integration of the systems of the erstwhile UT and Capital banks to offer customers a wide network of some 183 branches across the country.

The integration included the consolidation of core banking applications, procedures and processes, the training of staff and the streamlining of the branch network.

GCB has retained 22 out of the 53 branches of the defunct institutions based on their location and accessibility to customers.
As a result of the integration, staff numbers have been rationalized and GCB has absorbed almost 70 percent of the permanent staff of those banks.  Contract staff services, which are no longer required have been dispensed with.

Departing employees are to be paid a month’s salary in lieu of notice plus any earned leave since August last year.

The Bank in undertaking this exercise was mindful of its economic and social impact and therefore went to great lengths to strike the right balance in the interest of all stakeholders.

GCB Bank is grateful to customers and all other stakeholders for their support and understanding during the period of the integration.

Jacob Zuma: South Africa president 'rejects ANC request' to stand down

0

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma has defied his party and refused to step down, according to media reports.

He and senior members of the African National Congress (ANC) held talks on Sunday but no details of their meeting have been released.

Facing corruption allegations, Mr Zuma was replaced as ANC leader in December.

Party leaders, who may be trying to oust Mr Zuma before his State of the Nation address later this week, will hold an emergency meeting on Monday.

Julius Malema, an opposition leader and former ANC member, said on Twitter that Mr Zuma had been asked to stand down but had refused.

Mr Zuma, who spent time in prison for his part in the fight against apartheid, is most of the way through his second – and last – term as president.

Under his rule the civil service has expanded, HIV/Aids rates have decreased, and his plans for development have won support across the political spectrum. But the Zuma presidency has been overshadowed by allegations of corruption and his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, was elected the leader of the ANC party in South Africa in December on an anti-corruption platform.

Other unconfirmed reports from Sunday's meeting say that Mr Zuma asked for protection from prosecution for himself and his family.

What are the allegations against him?
Mr Zuma is accused of corruption, fraud, racketeering, money-laundering and tax evasion.

The 18 charges go back to the 1990s and relate to 783 payments made as part of an arms deal.

Mr Zuma and other government officials were accused of taking kickbacks from the purchase of fighter jets, patrol boats and other arms.

Charges were first brought against Mr Zuma in 2005 but dropped by prosecutors in 2009.

Mr Zuma has always denied any wrongdoing.

A businessman with links to him, Schabir Shaik, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for soliciting bribes from a French arms company.

Last year, the High Court ruled in a case brought by the opposition Democratic Alliance that Mr Zuma should face the charges.

Mr Zuma lodged a challenge with the Supreme Court of Appeal but it also ruled that he should face the charges.

There is also the prospect of an inquiry into so-called "state capture" – the allegation that a wealthy Indian-born family, the Guptas, has influenced government through a corrupt relationship with Mr Zuma. Both Mr Zuma and the Guptas deny the allegations.

Ghana’s Habib Ahmed loses WBO super middleweight title fight

0

Ghanaian boxer, Habib ‘Wild Hurricane’ Ahmed suffered a disappointing loss to his Mexican counterpart, Gilberto Ramirez on Saturday night in the WBO super middleweight title bout.

Ramirez dominated Habib throughout the fight and stopped him in round 6 when Habib’s corner threw in the towel.

The bout, at Corpus Christi, Texas-USA saw Ramirez winning all six rounds.
Ahmed (25-1-1, 17 KO), came in as an ‘unknown’ professional with his opponent while Ramirez (37-0, 25 KO) had many vouching for him due to past performances.

Analysts say the fight proved Ahmed was an overmatched title challenger to Ramirez.

Ramirez would potentially go to Australia to fight Rohan Murdock in the fall, then maybe return for a December fight.

This was Habib Ahmed’s first professional loss, who started his boxing career in 2011. All his previous 26 bouts were in Ghana.

26-year-old Ramirez has held the WBO super middleweight title since 2016, and is the first Mexican boxer to win a major world title in that weight class.

Africa has the resources to finance education – Akufo-Addo

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says Africa has the resources and capacity to finance access to quality education of its citizens, and also promote the interests of the continent.

According to President Akufo-Addo, “We cannot depend on other people to finance the education on our continent. I am saying that not to turn my back or to be ungrateful to all these important or noble people who have committed themselves to helping, no. But, if we make our policy dependent on other people, when their policy changes, we will suffer. But, if we make the policy for ourselves, then it means that, at all times, we will be in control of our own destiny.”

President Akufo-Addo made this known on Friday, 2nd February, 2018, when he led the Ghanaian delegation to the 3rd International Conference on the “Replenishment of the Funds of the Global Partnership for Education”, at the invitation of their Excellencies, M. Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal, and M. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic.

Reiterating his belief that there is an abundance of resources on the continent to finance the development of Africa, President Akufo-Addo stated that the resources can be put to good use by eliminating corruption in public life; having more intelligent arrangements for those who want to exploit the resources on the continent; and preventing the flight of capital out of the Continent.

“Thabo Mbeki’s Commission that looked at the illicit flows of capital out of Africa, has estimated that for every year, in the last ten years, $50 billion goes out of Africa through illicit means. Can you imagine what those monies, if we had our eyes open, and we were not complicit in that illicit outflow, would mean for the capacity of our nations?” he asked.

The challenge, therefore, confronting Africa, the President opined, is “how we can organise ourselves to make sure that the wealth, the huge wealth of this great continent, at least, in the first time in modern history, is used on behalf on the peoples of the continent, and not those outside.”

President Akufo-Addo was confident that “if we are able to close that gap, we will come here to Dakar to talk about education, and not the funding of education by others. We will be talking about the quality of our education, the changes we need to make to our curricula, and the emphasis we have to place on our history and sociology.”

He continued, “So that, I am not misunderstood, all those who have been making the pledges, it is all good. But, I think it is extremely important for us to get our whole mind set right. We have within us the capacity to develop and promote the interest of our continent ourselves. Let’s do it.”

Importance of Education

Touching on the importance of education to the advancement of the continent, President Akufo-Addo stated that the paradox of Africa having the youngest population, and being the richest continent on the planet, but with the worst living conditions can only be broken by education.

He indicated that “we are going to have to make sure that every young child, boy and girl, has access to education. Not only do they have access to education, but they have access to an education that will allow them to be able to address the challenges of the 21st century.”

Narrating the experience of Ghana, President Akufo-Addo stated that the country is determined to open opportunities for everybody.

“So, in the last 5 years, before my government came, every year, over 100,000 young Ghanaian students were unable to transition from Junior High School to Senior High School, largely because of money. Many of them fully qualified, but their parents were unable to support their higher education. We felt that at this stage in the history of our country, the Ghanaian State should take on that responsibility. So, as from September past, Senior High School education in the public school system has been made free,” he said.

The President continued, “What it has done is that the figures have revered. 90,000 more students entered senior school this year than the year before. It is the first step in ensuring that the educational system in our country, from kindergarten through primary to secondary, and ultimately through University, are open for everybody.”

In confronting the question of the quality of education that will prepare the young population of Africa for the life of the 21st century, he indicated that it is only a greater focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, which will guarantee the future of the continent.

“We have seen that in the development of the economies of Asia, in China, India, Japan, and Korea. That is the way forward, to be able to make the transition from poor to prosperity,” the President added.

President Akufo-Addo was accompanied to the Conference by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway MP; the Minister for Education, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; and officials of the Presidency, Foreign and Education Ministries.

Speaker rebukes unhealthy teacher-pupil sexual affairs in schools

0

The Speaker of Parliament Prof.Mike Quaye has bemoaned the increasing cases of amorous relationships between teachers and their female students.

The menace, he said, is not only affecting the academic performance in schools and the lives of the female students, but also derails mutual respect between teachers and the students.

He was speaking at the outdooring of Graphic acting Managing Director, Ransford Tetteh as development chief of Pakro, a town near Nsawam

The admonition by the First deputy speaker, Joe Osei-Wusu who represented his boss, Prof Mike Ocquaye follows recent reports of sexual escapades between teachers and students.

The headmaster of Edumanu D/A Basic School in the Central, Robert Sepey, made the headlines for the wrong reasons when a leaked video of his sexual escapades went viral few weeks ago.

He was engaging in kinky sex on a stool with a lady who just completed the same school.

Residents close to the school had suspected the headmaster and other male teachers of sexually harassing the girls in the school.

The video, they argued was enough evidence of the unhealthy amorous relationships the teachers have established with the students.

They have therefore demanded a mass transfer of all the male teachers.

In Ejisuman in the Ashanti Region, the male teachers are also battling allegations sexual molestations against the students.

The teachers have however vehemently denied the allegations.

The Speaker of Parliament insists teachers must always be role models to the students and not their sexual partners.

In an era of free education, the Speaker said a congenial environment must be created for teaching and learning in the school.

He also reminded parents to play their role in raising and training the kids in order to complement the efforts of the teachers in school.

The new development chief, Mr. Ransford Tetteh announced he will embark on an ultra-modern ICT centre and a Library shortly after his installation.

Migrant crisis: 16 bodies pulled from sea off Morocco

0

The bodies of 16 people have been pulled from the sea off the coast of Melilla, a small Spanish territory bordering Morocco.

Moroccan rescue services recovered the corpses after the crew of a Spanish ship spotted them in the water.

A medical official told AFP news agency all the dead were from sub-Saharan Africa, apart from one Moroccan.

It is thought they may have been hoping to reach Europe by sailing from Melilla, despite storm warnings.

Melilla, which is just 12 sq km (7 square miles), is a major crossing point for undocumented migrants seeking work or asylum in Europe.

It is one of only two EU land borders with Africa – the other being a second Spanish enclave, Ceuta.

The bodies were found floating on Saturday around 6-8km from Melilla's coast, Spanish newspaper El Pais reports (in Spanish).

A spokeswoman for Melilla's authorities said earlier that "about 20" bodies had been retrieved.

The exact death toll has not yet been confirmed. Spanish rescue services resumed a search on Sunday morning.

The sea crossing between North Africa and southern Spain is increasingly favoured by migrants, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

So far in 2018, Spain has been the second most popular entry point for incomers to Europe. IOM figures say some 1,279 arrived there, while 4,256 went to Italy.

Not including those recovered this weekend, at least 243 migrants have already died or gone missing this year after trying to cross the Mediterranean.
