ECG’s GH¢1.8bn Power Upgrade ‘Unprecedented’ – Energy Minister Jinapor Assures Improved Supply

0

Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has described the ongoing nationwide power system upgrade by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as unprecedented.

The project, valued at approximately GH¢1.8 billion, is aimed at improving electricity distribution and ensuring a more stable power supply across the country.

Speaking during a working visit to the ECG Nungua District Office at Lashibi in the Tema Region, the Minister noted that although the current investment is lower than the estimated GH¢9 billion spent under the previous administration, it is expected to deliver significant impact.

He explained that the initiative goes beyond replacing faulty and obsolete transformers and includes upgrading existing equipment to higher-capacity voltage systems to improve efficiency and reliability.

The visit, which included officials from the Energy Commission and ECG, forms part of ongoing efforts to assess the progress of the nationwide upgrade project.

The exercise began in the Greater Accra Region, where substantial investments have been made in replacing aging and outdated distribution transformers.

In the Tema Region alone, about GH¢13 million has been invested in transformer upgrades. Notably, the Lashibi power station has seen the replacement of a 50 MVA transformer with a higher-capacity 60 MVA unit, expected to improve electricity supply to more than 120,000 customers in the Nungua District and surrounding areas.

Minister Jinapor expressed satisfaction with the progress of work, noting that the investment is part of broader government measures to ensure a reliable and stable power supply nationwide.

Providing further details, Tema Regional Manager of ECG, Emmanuel Ankomah, said additional distribution transformers will be installed across several communities to boost supply. He also indicated that the company is strengthening its fault reporting centres to improve response times.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the next phase of the upgrade will extend to the Ashanti Region and later the Volta Region, where aging low-voltage infrastructure is set to be replaced.

Rising Transformer Theft in Tema Disrupts Power Supply – ECG Manager Raises Concern

0

The Tema Regional Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Emmanuel Ankomah, has raised alarm over increasing cases of theft targeting critical transformer components in the region.

Speaking to the media in Tema, Ing. Ankomah revealed that criminal groups are adopting more sophisticated methods, moving beyond the theft of copper parts to siphoning transformer oil and other essential materials.

He explained that the growing trend of vandalism is not only disrupting power supply to communities but also placing a heavy financial burden on the company due to costly repairs and replacement of damaged equipment.

The ECG official warned that if the situation is not addressed, it could further impact electricity distribution and service delivery in the area.

He called for increased public vigilance and support in reporting suspicious activities to help curb the menace and protect vital power infrastructure.

GRA Seeks Stakeholder Nominations for Technical Committee on AI in Customs Operations

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has invited key stakeholders to nominate representatives for a multi-party technical committee to support the deployment of artificial intelligence in customs operations.

In an official communication dated April 14, 2026, the GRA said the move follows a stakeholder meeting held at the Ministry of Finance on April 1, where it was agreed that a consultative platform be established to guide the implementation of the AI-driven system.

Push for AI in Customs

The proposed committee will focus on the deployment of Publican AI within customs processes, a step aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and stakeholder engagement in trade facilitation.

According to the GRA, the committee will serve as a collaborative platform to ensure continuous dialogue and input from all relevant institutions involved in customs and trade operations.

Call for Nominations

Stakeholders have been requested to nominate three representatives each to serve on the committee.

The first meeting of the technical committee is scheduled for April 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ministry of Finance in Accra.

Strengthening Collaboration

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by the GRA and the Ministry of Finance to modernize customs operations through technology while ensuring inclusivity in decision-making.

The letter was signed by Anthony K. Sarpong, Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA.

The formation of the committee is expected to play a key role in shaping how artificial intelligence is integrated into Ghana’s customs systems, with implications for revenue mobilization and international trade efficiency.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Association of Banks, John Awuah, has issued a strong warning to players in the financial sector, stressing that trust remains the foundation of banking operations and must be protected at all costs.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop involving board directors of various banks, Mr. Awuah cautioned that any breach of trust could pose a serious threat to the survival of the industry.

“As banks, our currency of trade is trust. Without trust, people will not walk into our banks and hand over their life savings and investments,” he stated.

He emphasised that a loss of public confidence could cripple banking operations, urging leadership across institutions to uphold high ethical standards and set the right tone from the top.

“If we lose the trust of the banking population, we have lost our business. The tone we set at the top is what reflects across all levels,” he added.

According to him, the workshop forms part of broader efforts to shield the sector from reputational risks such as fraud and unethical conduct, which have affected other industries.

Mr. Awuah disclosed that the Association will soon launch a nationwide public awareness campaign focused on fraud prevention, integrity, and professional standards.

Zero Tolerance for Fraud

Taking a firm stance, the GAB CEO advocated for a strict “name and shame” approach to address rising fraud cases within the banking sector.

“One fraud in the banking sector is one fraud too many,” he stressed.

He expressed concern over reports of some bank staff engaging in fraudulent activities, warning that even isolated incidents could significantly erode public trust.

His remarks follow concerns highlighted in recent reports by the Bank of Ghana regarding misconduct within parts of the financial sector.

Mr. Awuah maintained that exposing offenders and ensuring they face the full force of the law would serve as a strong deterrent.

“We must stand firm on integrity, strengthen internal controls, and ensure that anyone found culpable is dealt with decisively,” he said.

The initiative forms part of a broader push to reinforce accountability, professionalism, and ethical standards across Ghana’s banking industry, with the aim of restoring and sustaining public confidence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana has announced that the Republic of Ghana has entered into a new security and defence partnership with the European Union (EU), aimed at strengthening both national and regional security frameworks.

Key areas of collaboration include counter-terrorism, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, cybersecurity, border management, and support for peacekeeping and crisis response operations.

The Ministry explained that the partnership will also provide technical assistance, training, and equipment to bolster the operational capacity of Ghana’s security agencies.

Officials emphasized that the agreement builds on longstanding cooperation between Ghana and the EU, particularly in governance and security programmes across the West African sub-region. The new framework is expected to formalize and deepen these existing ties in a more structured and forward-looking manner.

Addressing public concerns, the Ministry categorically stated that the agreement does not allow for the establishment of foreign military bases in Ghana, nor does it permit the deployment of foreign troops on Ghanaian soil. It stressed that Ghana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain fully protected.

“The cooperation is strictly based on mutual respect, shared interests, and Ghana’s national security priorities,” the statement noted.

The government also dismissed circulating misinformation about the partnership, describing such claims as inaccurate and inconsistent with the agreement’s intent.

Ghana’s decision comes amid rising security challenges in the West African region, particularly the spread of violent extremism in the Sahel and increasing maritime threats in the Gulf of Guinea. Authorities say strengthening international partnerships is a critical step in safeguarding peace, stability, and development.

Reaffirming its broader foreign policy stance, Ghana underscored its commitment to non-alignment, peaceful coexistence, and good neighbourliness. The government also reiterated that it would not engage in any bilateral or multilateral arrangement that undermines the sovereignty of neighboring states.

The statement concluded with a pledge to uphold transparency, accountability, and national sovereignty in all international engagements.

Kasoa Gets Ultra-Modern DVLA Centre to Curb ‘Goro Boys’ Activities

Residents of Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East Municipality are set to benefit from improved driver and vehicle licensing services following the commissioning of a new ultra-modern centre by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

The facility, established in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, aims to eliminate the activities of middlemen—commonly referred to as “goro boys”—who often exploit motorists seeking DVLA services.

Speaking during the commissioning, the Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Services, Foster Akwesi Asante, stated that the initiative is part of efforts to decentralise DVLA operations and make services more accessible.

He explained that the new centre will significantly reduce the need for residents to travel long distances to access essential services such as vehicle registration and document renewals.

According to him, the inconvenience previously faced by motorists contributed to the rise of fraudulent intermediaries, adding that the new facility will streamline operations and help eliminate such practices.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, urged drivers in Kasoa and surrounding communities to take full advantage of the centre and avoid engaging unauthorised agents.

She also announced that Kasoa has been assigned its own vehicle registration prefix, “KS,” describing it as a major milestone for the rapidly growing municipality.

The commissioning of the new DVLA centre is expected to improve service delivery, enhance efficiency, and protect motorists from exploitation.
