“Gov’t to optimise flagship programmes in the coming months” – Ofori Atta

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government is set to optimize its flagship programmes in the coming months.

The NPP’s flagship programmes include Free SHS, “One District, One Factory”, “One Village, One Dam,” the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs, NABCO among others.

In recent times, there have been calls for a review of the Free SHS over the shortage of food in various secondary schools in the country.

The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Adutwum, says a review of government’s free SHS policy would go against the objective for which the policy was implemented.

Speaking to Atinka TV at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday July 16th 2022, the Minister for Education asked persons calling for the review to consider the purpose of the policy.

“Ask those who will pay if they will allow their children to go to any school other than the A class schools. I hear people say that those who can afford to pay, I tell you that the rich pay more taxes and it would not be fair to ask them to pay for the policy,” he added.

Reading the Mid year Budget Statement and Economic Policy on the floor of Parliament on Monday 25th July 2022, Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta said government, in the coming months, will optimize its flagship programmes.

“Will a reshuffle make the cedi stronger?” – Gabby asks

0

Former Executive Director of the Danquah Institute and a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko says a reshuffle will not make Ghana’s cedi stronger than the dollar.

There have numerous calls on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to change the Finance Minister following the country’s current economic crisis.

In July, New Patriotic Party (NPP) pressure group, The Royal Patriots, urged President Akufo-Addo to cause a reshuffle in his government and go a step further to relieve some appointees of their portfolios.

The group said it was a common observation that some appointees of government were sleeping on the job and it had become the concern of most political watchers, and even the ordinary man on the street. According to the Royal Patriots, “Most of these appointees, by their actions and inactions, believe that they are untouchable.”

“These factors include but not limited to non linkages of government programmes, unstable currency, domination of our productive sectors by foreigners, our people’s penchant desire for foreign made goods, which are not being regulated or tackled by the government and most importantly, non-performance of some government appointees.” The group said in a statement.

In a latest development, the NPP Kingpin said the people calling for the reshuffle are behaving as if a reshuffle will suddenly end the war in Ukraine and bring down Ghana’s inflation.

“It is as if a reshuffle will suddenly end the war in Ukraine, bring down inflation and make the cedi stronger than the dollar,” Gabby Otchere-Darko said in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta says he will not resign.

“It is almost like telling a father to resign from his children because he is changed his mind. There are times that decisions have to be made for the survival of a country and therefore if circumstances such as COVID or the Ukraine war occur which are not typical, it does change the environment, and sensible people will change their minds,” Ofori-Atta said in an interview.

The Deputy National Communications officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kwaku Boahen has said that despite being neglected by the government at the commissioning and commemoration of the late former President, Mr John Evans Atta Mills’s 10th anniversary of the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills, the NDC has put together a programme on its own to commemorate the 10th anniversary.

The ‘New’ Asomdwee Park was commissioned by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

It was renovated by the Atta Mills Institute in collaboration with the Coastal Development Authority.

Before the commissioning of the Park, some members of former President Atta-Mills’ family accused the government and the Coastal Development Authority of neglecting the family in the attempt to renovate the Park and requested the body of President Mills be given to them for reburial in his hometown, Ekumfi-Atuam in the Central Region.

“Was this something he had to go and commission?, something that someone built and it was renovated? Where we have gotten to as a country, some things are not necessary.” he said.

Minority mounts pressure on Akufo-Addo to put Atta Mills’ name on bust

The Minority through its leader, Mr Haruna Iddrisu has questioned why the name of the late former President, John Evans Atta-Mills was omitted from the bust (stone carrying inscriptions on bust).

On Sunday, 24th July 2022, the renovated Asomdwee Park, where Ghana’s former President John Evans Atta-Mills was laid to rest in 2012 was inaugurated.

The ‘New’ Asomdwee Park was commissioned by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

In 2020, President Akufo Addo, tasked the Coastal Development Authority with an important assignment to execute on behalf of the people of Ghana a befitting renovation of the Asomdwee Park upon receiving a request from the Atta-Mills Institute for government’s support in renovating the Park.

But responding to the said allegations, President Akufo Addo indicated that, such malicious and purported statements should be dismissed by the people of this great Nation.

Minority’s take
Reacting to the commissioning of the renovated Asomdwee Park, Mr Haruna Iddrisu said the minority and the family of the late President were surprised to see the name of President Akufo-Addo and the Chief Executive Officer of Atta-Mills memorial institute, Koku Anyidaho on the bust instead of the late President, John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills.

Mr Haruna therefore called on President Akufo-Addo and others who erected the bust, with immediate effect to change the inscriptions and replace it with the name of the late former President Atta-Mills and a brief history of him.

I’ll forever remain loyal to Mills -Koku Anyidoho

0

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Atta-Mills Institute, Mr.Samuel Koku Anyidoho has reiterated that he will forever remain loyal to his boss late former President John Evans Atta-Mills.

According to him, he was taken by surprise when the late former President Atta-Mills personally called him with humility and appealed to him to quit his banking career and join his team in the early days of 2005.

He continued that, after joining the team and working under him, late Mills remained humble and loyal and gave him more opportunities to explore rendering services to Ghana.

“If out of  millions of Ghanaians, a former President who has attempted to become President calls you in humility and asks you to work for him, God for bid that I will be disloyal to him”.

Koku Anyidoho also refuted claims by some people that, they held his hands and introduced him to former President Atta Mills adding that, former President Atta Mills personally called me on phone to join his team so all those statements running around by some people saying they held his hands to Atta-Mills remains a statement of those persons’ imagination.

“I realize very early that I had no option but to remain extremely loyal to the late President. When sometime in 2005, I was then working at the Metropolitan and Allied Bank as the head of treasury and finance.

“When he {Late Mills} personally called me in humility and said Koku please I think you have something to offer, I know you can help me so join the team.

“So if anybody is running around saying that he held my hands and took me to President Mills, it’s a statement of the person’s imagination. President Mills called me himself, hence the loyalty and the covenant working relationship between the two of us,” he added.

Koku Anyidoho  was  addressing dignitaries at the commissioning of the renovated Asomdwee Park to mark the 10th Anniversary of the passing of former President John Evans Atta-Mills in Accra.

H. E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo ( President of the Republic of Ghana) in 2020, tasked the Coastal Development Authority with an important assignment to execute on behalf of the people of Ghana a befitting renovation of the Asomdwee Park.

He said he was happy this renovation has happened under his watch as the President of the Republic adding that he didn’t undertake this step to bring division into the political party  the former President Mills belonged to.

N/R: Bawumia cuts sod for first inland Marine Port

0

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has cut the sod for work to begin on the construction of the first Inland marine port in the northern parts of Ghana and an accompanying Industrial Park at Debre in the Savannah Region.

The multimodal transport corridor, known as the Trans-Volta Logistics Corridor, is being undertaken by LMI Holdings and involves the development of a system to transport containers and bulk cargo from the Port of Tema to Burkina Faso and other landlocked countries via the Volta Lake. An additional port, to be constructed at the termination point of the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, will facilitate the embarkation and disembarkation of cargo from Tema and Debre.

The Debre Inland Port is expected to contribute to the infrastructural development of Ghana with a positive domino effect on transportation, jobs creation, rural development, revenue generation and many other benefits. The entire project is expected to be fully operational by 2025.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony on Friday, July 22, 2022 Vice President Bawumia underscored the importance of the project, especially for the movement of goods, cross border trade, and preservation of Ghana’s roads.

“Easing the congestion of clearing goods from Tema will be one of the main objectives for this port and industrial park. Using the Volta Lake, vessels will transport goods and containers in transit to and from the Tema Port. These containers will be moved by rail to Akwamu-Korankye (Eastern region) and then loaded onto barges to the Debre Inland Port. In Debre, operating at its fullest capacity like Tema with all the attendant facilities, containers will be offloaded and put on trucks to continue their journey further into the sub region. All services such as customs, transits clearances will be provided as pertains to any international port.

Saving Ghana’s Roads

“This $200 million inland marine port and the $250million Industrial Park will address a myriad of issues that continue to plague the movement of goods in Ghana and to our neighbours in the sub-region. Most of the over 30,000 trucks, annually, moving goods to landlocked countries of the northern boundary of Ghana will be taken off the roads. The total monetised benefit for the intervention encompasses a reduction in generalised cost, comprising vehicle operating cost, travel time, carbon emission, reduction in transportation cost and reduction in post-harvest losses,” he stated.

The greater part of the inland transport in Ghana happens via lorries, with the road transport system taking up 96% of freight and 97% of passenger traffic. This heavy reliance on roads for the transport of goods from the Tema port to Ghana’s landlocked neighbours has had a punishing effect on our roads, leading to shorter lifespans and concerns with safety.

“The investment in Inland ports offer superior logistics, the opportunity of large warehouses, proximity to rail and highways, ample truck parking, less traffic congestion, and economic incentives. It is estimated that each barge trip from the inland port, will take over 300 trucks off our roads. This monumental intervention will reap major savings on road maintenance. It will reduce the incidences of fatal road accidents that we, unfortunately, too often read and hear about in the media.”

Dr Bawumia emphasized that industrial parks, such as the one at Debre, signal business readiness in any given context, serving production and manufacturing needs for mutually beneficial businesses and industries.

“The availability of subsidized service and infrastructure such as roads, electricity, energy, water supply, and telecommunication services is a competitive standpoint, attracting international and foreign investors. For a growing economy, likes ours, Industrial Parks are a requirement for our industrialization. The Dawa Park by LMI and the Tema Free Zones Enclave are a testament to this.

“As witnessed with the Tema Port and the attendant booming of factories and other economic activities, the opportunity for Debre’s holistic economic growth is about to take off. Debre’s geographic positioning makes it significant for the Inland Port and the Industrial Park to be sited. The deep depth of the Volta Lake year-round offers all-seasons availability for barges for transportation to and from Debre. With the creation of auxiliary roads, linking Debre to other towns, it will become a hub that will attract other stakeholders in the ecosystem to set up other complementary facilities and businesses.”

Reiterating Government’s continued resolve to create an enabling environment and support for private sector investment, Dr Bawumia called on other organisations to emulate LMI Holdings.

“Let me congratulate LMI Holdings for this impressive feat. As a company, LMI comes to this project with a plethora of experience in infrastructure development. With over $450 million in assets, this Ghanaian conglomerate has interests in construction, industrial utilities, property, and logistics. In the last 20 years, since LMI Holdings developed the Special Economic Zones, over $3.4 billion of foreign direct investment has been contributed to Ghana’s economy.”

Present at the ceremony were the Minister for Transport, Hon Kwaku Ofori Asiamah; Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon Samuel Abu Jinapor; Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Mr Michael Luguge; and representatives of the governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

GJA Prez appeals to Wisconsin University to grant scholarships to GJA members

0

The Newly elected President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has appealed to the Chancellor of Wisconsin University College to give full scholarships to at least 20 of the Association’s members annually.

That he said will enable members to upgrade themselves to develop their mental capabilities.
The GJA President made the call on Wednesday at a meeting with the Chancellor of Wisconsin University.

Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, is one of the earliest established private universities in Ghana. It was established in January 2000 and is accredited by the National Accreditation Board as a university college and affiliated to the University of Ghana, the University of Cape Coast, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the University for Development Studies.

Twenty-two (22) years in existence, Wisconsin University College has been able to establish two campuses, here in Accra and Kumasi with a population of over 6,000 students. The institution also offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Certificate (Short Courses) programs.

The long-lasting relationship between the Ghana Journalist Association and Wisconsin University College over the years has seen great achievements. In this regard, the Chancellor of the University, Dr. Paul Kofi Fynn invited the newly elected GJA Executives to have an engagement with them as they officially assumed office recently.

As part of the engagement, the GJA Executives, together with some members from the media fraternity had the opportunity to tour the entire department on the campus to have an overview of some of their Ultramodern State -of- the -art facilities.

Speaking at the meeting after the tour, the GJA President, Mr. Dwumfour, expressed his profound gratitude to the Chancellor of Wisconsin for endorsing him during the GJA general elections.

Addressing areas of possible collaboration between GJA and Wisconsin, Mr. Dwumfour seized the opportunity to appeal to Dr. Paul Fynn to support members of Ghana Journalist Association in areas of capacity training workshop, as well as providing quota as side the educational scholarship promised earlier.

“Chancellor is a member of the GJA and he was present on the election day to cast his vote, and I am humbled to say that he endorsed my candidature, as well as the executives here, and I, want to use that opportunity to thank him for his endorsement and we assure him that we are not going to fail or disappoint him”.

“We ask that at least you also support the GJA in areas of capacity training workshops, giving us also quota aside the scholarship, we want to institute a summer school and we want to partner Wisconsin in that regard,” he said.

The Chancellor of Wisconsin University College, Dr. Paul Kofi Fynn, entreated the government to involve more private participation in educational sectors.

“I believe in private participation than government participation. We should not depend too much on the government because it will fail us. I encourage the government to think through on the education system and that it should be handed over to private individuals,” he said.

According to him, this will help improve monitoring and evaluation and also reduce bribery and corruption in most public organizations.
