Ken Ofori-Atta Scheduled to Appear in U.S. Court Today Over Immigration Status

0

Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s former Finance Minister, is scheduled to face a United States court on Tuesday, January 20, following actions by U.S. immigration authorities regarding his residency status.

According to reports, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has determined that Mr Ofori-Atta is no longer lawfully present in the country.

The court appearance may open the door to extradition proceedings to Ghana.

In response to public speculation, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has clarified that the case does not involve a standard visa overstay, saying Mr Ofori-Atta’s visitor visa was deliberately cancelled by U.S. authorities.

Dr Ayine, speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 10, said Mr Ofori-Atta was permitted to stay in the United States until November 29 but did not depart as required.

He added that the visa revocation was intentional and related to ongoing investigations, rather than routine immigration procedures.

The Attorney-General said the revocation of Mr Ofori-Atta’s visa, which was initially valid until February, confirms that the issue extends beyond immigration compliance.

He added that the extradition request is connected to investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor regarding the SML case, with strong collaboration between Ghanaian and U.S. officials.

Meanwhile, former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, is expected in a U.S. court on January 21 as part of processes relating to her potential extradition to Ghana.

I Haven’t Quit Music – Opanka Explains Absence, Unveils New Song

Ghanaian rapper Armstrong Affum, popularly known as Opanka, rose to prominence after a widely acclaimed freestyle on the hit song “Simple” by Bradez.

He later released his debut single, “Taste,” which received positive reviews from music lovers.

Upon his recent visit to the Tobinco Media Group, Opanka granted an interview to Miss Melody on Atinka Television, where he addressed circulating rumors suggesting that he had quit music.

The rapper clarified that his absence from the music scene was due to his decision to travel to the United States to further his education.

According to him, balancing education, music, and family responsibilities can be extremely stressful, which informed his choice to focus on his studies at the time.

Opanka, however, emphasized that he has not abandoned music. “I have released a new single titled ‘No Mercy,’” he revealed.

He further appealed to Ghanaians to continue supporting his music by streaming his songs across all digital platforms, as he works towards reaching the pinnacle of his career.

#BringKenBack Protest: US Does Not Want to Release Ofori-Atta – Bernard Mornah

0

Civil activist and flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has alleged that the United States government is deliberately refusing to release former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to face accountability in Ghana.

Speaking on Ghana Nie on Atinka TV, hosted by Ama Gyenfa Ofosu-Darkwah, Mr Mornah claimed that actions taken by US authorities suggest a lack of genuine commitment to Ofori-Atta’s extradition.

According to him, the US only released photographs and news about Ofori-Atta’s reported detention to douse public anger and frustrate planned protests.

He noted that the information was made public just days before a scheduled demonstration, creating the impression that American authorities were working towards extraditing the former finance minister.

“It is clear that the United States does not want to release Ken Ofori-Atta,” Mr Mornah stated, adding that the former minister’s investments in the US may be working in his favour.

Bernard Mornah announced that he will join the Arise Ghana movement tomorrow for a protest at the American Embassy in Accra. He said the picketing will continue until Ken Ofori-Atta is brought back to Ghana to answer questions regarding his stewardship.

He challenged the former finance minister to return voluntarily if he believes he has committed no wrongdoing.

“Ken Ofori-Atta is a man of God who always wears white and quotes the Bible. He should have faith in the system and come and account to the people. If you know you’ve done nothing wrong, come and account to the people. Nothing will happen to you,” he said.

The PNC flagbearer cited examples of other public officials who, according to him, subjected themselves to investigations without fleeing the country. He mentioned former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who he said honoured invitations from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) every two weeks after his first term in office, as well as Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who he noted is currently undergoing similar scrutiny.

“So why is Ken afraid?” Mr Mornah questioned.

The planned protest at the American Embassy is expected to draw activists demanding transparency and accountability over the former finance minister’s whereabouts and alleged attempts to evade investigation.

Senegal Crowned AFCON Champions After Chaotic 1–0 Extra-Time Win Over Morocco

0

Senegal are the new kings of African football after defeating host nation Morocco 1–0 in a dramatic, controversy-laden Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat.

The tightly fought contest was settled in extra time when Pape Gueye produced a moment of magic, firing a thunderous strike into the top corner to finally break Moroccan resistance and spark wild celebrations on the Senegalese bench.

While Gueye’s goal decided the final, the match will be remembered as much for its extraordinary drama as for the football itself.

Controversy and Chaos in Regulation Time

The closing stages of regulation time were dominated by controversy. Senegal thought they had taken the lead when Ismaïla Sarr found the net, but play was stopped prematurely for an earlier decision, eliminating any possibility of a VAR review. The ruling sparked fury among Senegalese players and officials, who felt a legitimate goal had been unfairly denied.

Moments later, the drama swung the other way. Morocco were awarded a late penalty after a VAR review ruled that El Hadji Malick Diouf had fouled Brahim Díaz in the box. The decision further inflamed tensions, prompting Senegalese players to briefly walk off the pitch in protest.

When order was restored, Díaz stepped up amid deafening noise inside the stadium, but his penalty was brilliantly saved, keeping Senegal level and alive. Emotions boiled over in the ninth minute of stoppage time as fans breached hoardings in the stands, forcing further delays.

Gueye Delivers in Extra Time

Extra time was played in a charged atmosphere, but Senegal showed greater composure and resilience. Gueye’s stunning strike finally separated the two sides, allowing the West Africans to manage the remainder of the match and seal a hard-fought AFCON triumph.

As Senegal celebrated a memorable title victory, Morocco were left to reflect on missed opportunities and contentious decisions in a final that will be debated for years to come.

The night in Rabat will go down as one of the most dramatic and chaotic AFCON finals in the tournament’s history.

OPANKA Recounts How His Song ‘Hold On’ Saved a Life in the U.S.

Ghanaian musician OPANKA has shared an emotional account of how his music made a life-saving impact, revealing that his song “Hold On” helped prevent a young woman in the United States from committing suicide.

According to the artiste, the song became a source of hope for the young woman during a deeply difficult period in her life. OPANKA disclosed that the woman’s mother later reached out to him to explain how the song’s lyrics encouraged her daughter to persevere and rethink her decision at a time when she felt overwhelmed by life’s challenges.

“Hold On,” released five years ago, features award-winning singer and songwriter Kofi Kinaata and carries a strong message of resilience and perseverance.

OPANKA made the revelation during a discussion on Atinka TV’s social programme Efie Asetena, hosted by Odehyie Naana, where he spoke about the influence of music lyrics on human emotions, mindset, and behaviour.

He stressed that music goes far beyond entertainment and has the power to shape thoughts, inspire hope, and influence life-changing decisions, particularly among young people.

The musician noted that while many artistes focus heavily on the commercial side of music, its social responsibility is often overlooked. He therefore urged his colleagues in the music industry to be intentional about the messages they put out.

“Music is powerful. It can heal, motivate, and save lives just as it can also mislead,” OPANKA said.

“Children and young people listen to our songs every day, and the lyrics we release can influence their mindset and actions.”

His story has reignited conversations about the role of music in mental health awareness and social development, highlighting how meaningful content can have a profound impact beyond borders.

OPANKA concluded by encouraging artistes to strike a balance between creativity, commercial success, and social responsibility, emphasizing that music with purpose can make a lasting difference in people’s lives.

Timber Monitoring Team Steps on Powerful Toes as Police Arrest Aide

An aide to the Director of the newly inaugurated National Timber Monitoring Team (NTMT), identified as Edem, has been arrested in what eyewitnesses described as a “Rambo-style” operation by the Tepa Police in the Ashanti Region.

The arrest comes just days after the National Timber Monitoring Team was officially inaugurated on Monday, 12 January 2026, and deployed nationwide to intercept illegal lumber transportation and clamp down on the persistent destruction of Ghana’s forest resources.

The NTMT has since been actively monitoring major timber routes across the country, a move that appears to have unsettled powerful interests operating within the forestry sector.

Sources close to the operation indicate that the team’s enforcement activities may be stepping on the toes of a deeply entrenched cabal within the Forestry Commission, allegedly determined to continue the large-scale depletion of Ghana’s forests through illegal logging and timber trafficking.

According to available information, the current developments are linked to earlier efforts to expose forestry-related cartels and their financial networks.

A formal complaint had previously been filed by Yeboah Kwaku Ninson, a Range Manager with the Forest Services Division of the Forestry Commission. In that complaint, he accused the Deputy Chief Executive, Eric Elikem Kotoko, together with some soldiers and other individuals, of undertaking similar operations last year aimed at uncovering illegal timber activities.

Those actions, according to insiders, reportedly exposed well-organised cartels benefiting financially from illegal lumber movements while the state continued to lose significant revenue and valuable forest resources.

Although several senior officials of the Forestry Commission have reportedly been fingered in the alleged rot, their identities have not been made public.

Sources say the matter has been forwarded to the appropriate appointing authority, and further directives are being awaited before additional names are officially disclosed.

Meanwhile, the arrest of Edem has raised concerns among environmental activists and stakeholders, who fear that the enforcement efforts of the newly inaugurated NTMT may be facing resistance from individuals determined to protect entrenched illegal interests.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the arrest are ongoing, and authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

More details are expected as developments unfold.
