Barbados becomes world’s newest republic

0

Barbados has officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state and become the world’s newest republic.

In an overnight ceremony in the capital, Bridgetown, Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as president.

The Prince of Wales and Barbadian singer Rihanna attended the event, which coincided with the country’s 55th anniversary of independence.

In a speech, Prince Charles acknowledged the “appalling atrocity of slavery” the Caribbean island suffered.

The new era for Barbados ends Britain’s centuries of influence, including more than 200 years when the island was a hub for the transatlantic slave trade.

To signify the official change of power, a final salute was made to the British monarchy and the Royal Standard flag was lowered and replaced.

Speaking as the guest of honour at the event, Prince Charles reiterated the continuing ties between the two nations despite the constitutional status change.

He described the moment as a new beginning before being awarded the prestigious Order of Freedom of Barbados by the new president.

The Queen sent the country her “warmest good wishes” for “happiness, peace and prosperity in the future” and said the nation holds a “special place” in her heart.

Dame Sandra Mason, 72, the island’s governor-general since 2018, was named as president-elect of the nation following a vote in parliament last month. She now replaces the Queen as the head of state.

“Vessel Republic Barbados has set sail on her maiden voyage. May she weather all storms and land our country and citizens safely on the horizons and shores which are ahead of us,” she said after being sworn in.

Barbados announced its plan to become a republic last year, but it will remain within the Commonwealth.

Leading national figures, including Prime Minister Mia Mottley, swore allegiance to Barbados in front of the new president at the ceremony, which lasted for several hours.

She later announced that pop star Rihanna would be named a national hero by President Mason. The artist and businesswoman, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, was previously named an ambassador by her home country in 2018.

“May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation,” Ms Mottley said, in reference to one of Rihanna’s songs.

A positive and pragmatic handover

Analysis box by Daniela Relph, royal correspondent

In the heat of a Barbados night, the handover ceremony has combined pomp and ceremony with one big party.

It has been a show of national pride with a sprinkling of this island’s most famous names as VIP guests including the cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers and the singer Rihanna.

In between them both sat the Prince of Wales. It must have been a moment of mixed emotions for him – he took the final salute and watched the Royal Standard lowered for the last time as his mother was removed as head of state.

He used his speech to emphasise the pain of slavery and the enduring friendship of the two nations.

The mood music from the royal household has been positive and pragmatic.

They can’t stop a constitutional shift but they can try to ensure positive relationships remain.

2px presentational grey line

The country’s prime minister has described the move to a republic as a “seminal moment” which will see Barbados fully leave its colonial past behind.

It was one of England’s first slave colonies. English settlers first occupied the island in 1627 and, under British control, it became a sugar plantation economy using enslaved people brought in from Africa.

Slavery was abolished in Barbados in 1834 and the country became fully independent in 1966.

In his speech on Tuesday, Prince Charles spoke of the “appalling atrocity of slavery” which he said “forever stains our history”.

Before Barbados, the last nation to remove the Queen as head of state was Mauritius in 1992.

With a population of about 285,000 people, Barbados is one of the more populous and prosperous Caribbean islands.

Once heavily dependent on sugar exports, its economy has diversified but has been hit hard by Covid-19 hurting tourism and rising prices caused by supply chain disruptions.

Dramani
Dr Rashid Dramani

The Executive Director for Africa Centre for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Rashid Dramani says the Minister for Finance, Mr Ken Ofori Atta should have engaged the Minority in Parliament before the voting day to prevent the events which occurred last Friday.

According to him, the timing was wrong for the Minister to engage the minority on the budget.

The 2022 budget statement was on Friday rejected by the country’s Parliament after a heated debate.

The rejection was made possible after all 137 Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) voted against the motion on Friday while members of the Majority Caucus had abandoned their seats in protest against alleged bias on the part of the Speaker of Parliament.

Prior to the crucial voting, the Speaker had called for a head count to establish if the House had form a quorum in order to proceed.

The Finance Minister, who was present in the house, to prayed the house’s permission for some time to engage leadership of both the minority and majority before the question is put to the house for approval or rejection.

But the House subsequently rejected the minister’s prayer, and also voted against the motion for the approval of the budget, in the absence of the majority group who staged a walk out form the house.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Dr Rashid Dramani said,”The Minister for Finance was in Parliament to build a consensus, I will commend him for that, that has to be a continuous process but the consensus that he sought to build was very late in the day, that was not the moment. The moment the vote was going to be cast was not the moment to build consensus, that should have been done way before.”

He added that, “As soon as he presented his budget, there were concerns from the minority side, so maybe he should have engaged them earlier and then we would have averted the situation on that day.”

Moving forward, Dr Rashid Dramani recommended that the Minister engages the Minority so that they can have a consensus before parliament sits on the matter again.

“The Minister would have to engage the other side or he might not be able to get this budget passed the way it is. The other side would also have to consider and give in, in terms of certain aspects of their demand, they cannot get all their demands, so that at the end of the day, we have a win win and we move on as a country,” he added.

Manchester United have appointed Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager until the end of the season, subject to work visa requirements.

Ralf , a 63-year-old takes over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked on 21 November following a defeat by Watford.

Rangnick has left his role as head of sports and development at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow to take up the job.

“I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season,” said Rangnick.

Following the end of this season, Rangnick will stay on at Old Trafford for an additional two years in a consultancy role.

His first game in charge of United, who are eighth in the Premier League, could be against Arsenal on 2 December if his work permit application is received in time.

If not, temporary manager Michael Carrick will remain in charge of the side.

“The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience,” added Rangnick.

“All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team.

“Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club’s longer-term goals on a consultancy basis.”

Rangnick has built an impressive coaching reputation during his time in Germany, with both Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel speaking highly about their compatriot.

He set Ulm on course to promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time before spells in charge of Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke and RB Leipzig.

He won the German Cup with Schalke in 2011 and took RB Leipzig to the final in 2019.

KOSS murder: 5 juveniles standing trial remanded

0

The five juveniles standing trial for the murder of 15-year-old first-year student of Konongo Odumase Senior High School have been remanded.

Five students of the Konongo Odumase Senior High School (KOSS) in the Ashanti Region, who are on trial for  murder related charges, have been remanded for roles played in the stabbing of a 15-year-old first-year student to death at Konongo Odumase Senior High School.

According to a police statement, the 5 KOSS students went on a bullying spree on the night of Friday, November 5, 2021, after prep hours leading to the attack on the deceased, Sam’un Larhan, 15.

Larhan Sam’un was stabbed with a knife by his colleague after he attempted to resolve a scuffle between the suspect and his mates.

Preliminary investigations by the Konongo Police Command shows that, the prime suspect, 17-year-old Emmanuel Frimpong was abusing some form-one KOSS students and upon resistance by some students, he stabbed the deceased.

One has been charged with murder while the rest were charged with abetment to murder.

Lawyer for the suspectsRichard Adu Darko, on Monday November 15th 2021prayed the Konongo District Court to grant the suspects bail.

He asked the court to consider the fact that the five students are final year students who are preparing to write their end-of-year exams.

The suspects were remanded to the Juvenile Detention Centre in Juaso.

In a new development, the five juveniles were remanded when they appeared before court today Monday 29th November 2021.

This according to the court is to allow the office of the Attorney General complete processes to transfer the case to a higher court.

Speaking to the media after proceddings, Lawyer for the suspects told press men that although they prayed that once again they should be granted bail, the court gave reasons why they cannot grant the children bail.

“Today, we prayed that once again they should be granted bail [but] the court gave reasons why they cannot give these children bail.”

“Our argument was on the fact that per the welfare principle in the Juvenile Justice Act being the objective, they have to consider the education of these juveniles and then give them to their parents so that they report to court from home. But the court indicated that even as it stands now the school is a hostile ground for the children, looking at the nature of the issues,” lawyer Adu Darko told journalists.

A National Communications Team Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Charles Bissue says Members of Parliament (MP) should have amended the E-Levy if they felt it would be a burden on the people and then pass the budget instead of rejecting it totally.
