Covid-19: GMA calls on gov’t to secure more vaccines

The leadership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has asked Ghanaians to make the ongoing vaccination a priority.

This according to the GMA will prevent a fourth wave of the coronavirus.

Another variant of the coronavirus has been detected. The Omicron’ variant was first detected by South African scientists.

The variant has, however, has been found in several countries around the world.

A statement signed by the President and General Secretary for the GMA,  Dr Frank Serebour and Dr Titus Beyuo respectfully urged government to continue all efforts at limiting the importation of COVID-19 by increased testing at the ports of entry as well as sequencing of all positive cases to enable prompt detection and containment of mutant strains such as the omicron variant.

GMA also asked government to secure more vaccines for the nation, as part of improved efforts to prevent the nation from entering into a fourth wave.

“We call on government to continue all efforts at limiting the importation of COVID-19 by increased testing at the ports of entry as well as sequencing of all positive cases to enable prompt detection and containment of mutant strains such as the omicron variant.”

“We also urge all persons especially those in the affected areas to cooperate with the ongoing vaccination exercise and report any suspected case to the appropriate authorities,” GMA said in a statement.

Covid: Omicron variant in Netherlands earlier than thought

0

The new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, was present in the Netherlands earlier than previously thought, officials say.

It was identified in two test samples taken in the country between 19 and 23 November, which is before the variant was first reported by South Africa.

It is not clear whether those who took the tests had visited southern Africa.

It was previously thought that two flights that arrived from South Africa on Sunday had brought the first cases of the variant to the Netherlands.

Fourteen people on the flights to the capital, Amsterdam, tested positive for Omicron, among 61 passengers who were found to have coronavirus.

Early evidence suggests Omicron has a higher re-infection risk. But scientists say it will take about three weeks before it is known how the heavily mutated variant impacts on the effectiveness of vaccines.

“In a special PCR test, the samples showed an abnormality in the spike protein,” the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) which announced the earlier cases, said on Tuesday.

“This raised the concern that the Omicron variant… might be involved. [Health officials] will notify the people involved and start source and contact tracing,” it said.

The RIVM also said that a number of different strains of Omicron were found among the passengers on board the two flights on Sunday.

“This means that the people were very probably infected independently from each other, from different sources and in different locations,” a spokesman said.

It’s unlikely we will ever know precisely when or where Omicron first emerged.

South Africa alerted the world to the new variant on 24 November after it found its first case. Since then, other countries have been on the lookout for it and more cases have been identified around the globe thanks to gene sequencing tests.

Not every nation has the ability, however, to carry out these added checks.

Even the UK, which is one of the front-runners using the technology, is unable to screen every positive Covid case to determine which variant is the cause.

PCR tests, meanwhile, can hint if a Covid case might be Omicron, but cannot confirm it for sure.

Dutch authorities, meanwhile, are also seeking to contact and test thousands of passengers who have travelled from South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

The US, Canada, the UK and the EU have all restricted travel from southern Africa amid concern over the new variant.

But the UN Secretary General António Guterres said he was “deeply concerned” about the isolation of southern Africa, adding that “the people of Africa cannot be blamed for the immorally low level of vaccinations available”.https://emp.bbc.com/emp/SMPj/2.44.5/iframe.htmlMedia caption, Watch Dr Angelique Coetzee, the doctor who first spotted Omicron, describe “extremely mild” symptoms in patients

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said the wider region had been the victim of unfair discrimination, adding that the bans would not be effective in preventing the spread of the variant.

A foreign ministry statement also said the travel bans were “akin to punishing South Africa for its advanced genomic sequencing and the ability to detect new variants quicker”.

“Excellent science should be applauded and not punished,” it said.

Mahama supports diabetes patients to mark 63rd birthday

0

Former President John Dramani Mahama with his wife, Lordina Mahama and children, yesterday celebrated his 63rd birthday with patients and staff of the Diabetes Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

He noted in his address that the Centre was doing very well in its educational efforts yet diabetes was on the rise and needed to be given attention and support.

“Patients needs to check their sugar level to know even at home and not to wait only until they come to the hospital before that is done,” he noted.

Former President Mahama said it was for this reason that he had decided to donate the glucometers to patients to enable them monitor their blood sugar level even at home.

His Excellency John Mahama stressed the need for people to lead healthy lifestyles by exercising and eating healthy diets to avoid lifestyle diseases.

The Chief Executive of the hospital, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, praised the former President for choosing to celebrate his birthday with the Centre and more especially donating glucometers to patients.

He urged other high profile personalities to emulate the example of the former President.

Dr. Ampomah said this could cause a cultural paradigm shift where people would move away from organizing lavished birthday parties to using the occasion of birthdays to support worthy causes in society.

The head of the National Diabetes Management and Research Centre, Dr Yacoba Atiase, expressed appreciation to the former President for the donation.

Former President John Mahama donated 150 pieces of glucometres and packed lunches which was distributed to patients at the Diabetes Centre.

SSNIT assures pensioners of regular payment of pensions

0

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says it has taken note of concerns raised by the Africa Centre for Retirement Research (ACRR) and has consequently assured all stakeholders and the public that the SSNIT Scheme presently has enough reserves to pay all accruing benefits due Members and their validly nominated dependants.

In a statement, Managers of the Scheme gave the assurance that the concerns raised in the 2017 actuarial valuation report which was referred to by ACRR are being addressed. “Key among these concerns is the debt owed the Scheme by employers,” it said.

The Trust encouraged and reminded employers to pay the social security contributions of their workers by 14th of the ensuing month to avoid paying penalties. “However, where employers fail to do so, they have the option to negotiate terms of settlement. Management of SSNIT initiates court action against defaulting employers who fail to take advantage of negotiations,” the statement added.

According to SSNIT, Management of the Trust has not relented in its efforts to retrieve all arrears owed the Trust by employers to improve the sustainability of the Scheme adding that, as of September this year, 7,951 criminal cases were pending in court against defaulting employers.

“Also, over 500 employers including Government, have arranged for terms of settlement,” it indicated.

“It must be noted that Government has since 2017 paid GHS5.77 billion to clear social security contributions owed by successive governments. SSNIT continues to actively engage Government, the largest employer, to pay the contributions of its employees.

“In 2019, the Director-General of SSNIT hinted that the Trust was consulting stakeholders for possible reforms in the administration and funding of the basic social security scheme (source: Goldstreet Business edition on Friday 3rd May, 2019).

The Trust therefore assures all Members and the public that it will continue to ensure prudent management of funds to enhance the long term sustainability of the Scheme” the statement conluded.

Qwikloan to cease operations if E-levy is implemented – GM warns

0

The Chief Executive Officer of Afb Ghana, operators of Qwikloan services on MTN has hinted that it would cease to exist in a year if the proposed electronic transaction levy (e-levy) is implemented in its current form.

The 1.75% tax on electronic financial transactions was proposed in the 2022 budget statement presented before Parliament by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.

The Minister explained that the tax measure was to raise revenue to support job creation initiatives, construction of road infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure.

Ken Ofori-Atta was hopeful that the proposal would come into full force from February 2022.

However, this proposal has been widely been kicked against by Ghanaians.

The minority group in Parliament rejected the 2022 budget as a result of the proposed e-Levy and other concerns raised in the budget.

MTN Ghana in partnership with Afb GHANA launched the “Qwikloan” service in 2017 to provide convenience to customers in times of need to enhance their business.

The service, dubbed, “Qwikloan” is fast, easy, and convenient which enables customers to access loans using their MTN mobile money platform.

Qwikloan is a 30-day loan. It has flexible payment terms with an interest of 6.9% but a default payment of 12.5% interest charges. It does not need a bank account and guarantor to access it.

However, a Facebook post on November 30, 2021, by the CEO of Afb Ghana Arnold Parker to celebrate four years anniversary, forewarned that the service will fold up should the government go ahead with the e-levy in the current shape.

“Four years ago today, together with our partners MTN and Jump, we launched what has arguably become Ghana’s most utilised financial product -Quick loan. In the 4 years that Quickloan has been in existence, we have disbursed over Ghc7billion to well over 4.2 million people. Interesting that the Quickloan anniversary comes at a time when heated discussion on the e-Levy rages on,” Arnold Parker stated.

He continued “If I plug in the proposed e-Levy rate into our financials, Quickloan would cease to exist within a year. Yet it is a product like Qwikloan, which has been a lifesaver for millions in their times of need, that has the potential to transform this economy”.

Arnold Parker has in an earlier post advised against free things by the government.

“Let’s turn our attention to building our economy now. A country that’s supposed to have a GDP of $600 billion should not be ok when its GDP is $60 billion. For many decades now we have operated way below our potential and robbed millions of our kith and Skin a decent life. The more free things we promise the people, the more businesses we must allow to flourish to find the freebies. It is time to build and grow Ghanaian businesses.

Sex harassment rife in parliament – Study

0

A third of employees in Australia’s federal parliament have been sexually harassed, a landmark report has found.

The report was commissioned after a former staffer, Brittany Higgins, said she had been raped by a colleague in a minister’s office.

Her story earlier this year triggered a wave of wide-ranging allegations of misconduct in Canberra.

The victims were disproportionately women, said Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins.

The report, titled Set the Standard, found 51% of staffers had experienced some form of bullying, sexual harassment or actual or attempted sexual assault.

“Such experiences leave a trail of devastation for individuals and their teams and undermine the performance of our parliament to the nation’s detriments,” said Ms Jenkins, the report’s author.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the findings as “appalling”, adding: “I wish I found it more surprising”.

Mr Morrison has previously been accused of being “tone deaf” on issues disproportionately affecting women in parliament.

The review, tabled in federal parliament on Tuesday, interviewed 1,723 people and 33 organisations.

It found 63% of female parliamentarians had experienced sexual harassment – an even higher percentage than for political staffers.

One unnamed MP told the review: “Aspiring male politicians who thought nothing of, in one case, picking you up, kissing you on the lips, lifting you up, touching you, pats on the bottom, comments about appearance, you know, the usual. The point I make with that … [w]as the culture allowed it, encouraged it.”https://emp.bbc.com/emp/SMPj/2.44.5/iframe.htmlMedia caption, Tens of thousands of people across Australia protested against abuse and harassment

The report made recommendations including improving leadership and gender balances, and reducing a culture of alcohol.

Ms Higgins said she urged MPs across the political divide to “implement these recommendations in full”.

“I want to thank the many brave people who shared their stories, which contributed to this review,” she said.
