Former Education Minister and the 2020 Running Mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has advised supporters of political parties to ensure that they do not engage in any violence while at Assin North for the By-Elections.

She said the supporters went there to support their candidates and so even in their excitement, they should not do something that will cause their injury.

She gave the advice when addressing the media at Assin Breku during the election.

Candidates of three political parties, New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) are battling for the Assin North Parliamentary seat today, Tuesday, June 27.

The seat became vacant after the Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 17, unanimously declared unconstitutional the election of James Gyakye Quayson as the MP for the area.

The highly anticipated by-election was however necessitated after Parliament wrote to the Electoral Commission declaring the seat vacant.

The NPP candidate, Charles Opoku, is number one on the ballot paper, with LPG candidate, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, occupying the second position on the ballot and the NDCcandidate, James Gyakye Quayson, on number three.

Already, there have been reports that party members from both the NPP and NDC are arguing over allegations of vote buying.

Addressing the media, Prof. Opoku Agyemang stated that,”You are a visitor here and you know why you came here, you are here to support your candidate, you are here to support your party and so no matter how you support, it should not be violent.”

She added,”Whether you picked a car or whatever, you are already here so if there will be an excitement, do not let it be too much such that it will bring injury to you.”

Meanwhile, she said she had not seen anybody sharing anything to influence voters, adding that those involved should face the law.

However, she complained of overcrowding, questioning why the queues were long.

Meanwhile, she encouraged all to go out and vote in time.
