Danger at Abensu! Dilapidated bridge threatening lives of school children

Residents living at Abensu, a town near Pokuase in the Ga North Municipality are living in fear over a bridge that seemingly has become a death trap in the area.
The only bridge along the Nsakena River, connecting the community to the Pokuase Township is in a precarious condition, threatening lives and properties.
The concrete pillars supporting the structure are weak and partly washed away by the river.
While the logs are fixed by the community folks, the base of the structure gets rotten fast due to the constant exposure to the water. Atop the structure, some of the slabs have also been removed, creating holes in between them and nails sticking out.
However, commuters- both young and old, Women, traders and other town folks are seen crossing the bridge though at bated breaths. They say, “this is the only nearest road that connects the town to Pokuase.”
According to the people, several efforts to get authorities to fix the bridge have fallen on death ears.
Residents say Member of Parliament for Trobu constituency, Moses Anim is not far from the vicinity. They slammed him for doing little about their plight.
One resident at Abensu Agric Quarters, who gave his name as B. Ocansey, shared his ordeal when he once fell on the bridge and injured his right leg.
The bridge according to him, has been in a bad state for so long, creating a major risk to schools in this area, but nothing has been done about it despite countless complaints. “……we are even tired of the number of repairs we have done as community members.”
He further added, “anytime the youth made an attempt to fix the bridge, the MP prevented us from doing so”.
Assemblyman for the Abensu Electoral Area, Nuhu Mohammed, explained that the issue has been raised several times  at the Ga North Municipal Assembly but nothing has been done yet.
“The assembly engineer was here some four months ago but we have not heard from him yet; we will continue to appeal to the assembly to provide a permanent structure for us,” he added
The community members fear the situation will be dire if nothing is done to repair the bridge.
The onset of the rains would cause the river to overflow and subsequently submerge the dilapidated bridge – cutting off economic and school activities.
“We want government to come to our aid to provide a school for our children to safeguard their future”, the Regent of the Abensu”, Nii Asase appealed.
