Double track: Free SHS students to learn for 81 days in a semester

Students under the Free SHS policy are to study for 81 days in a semester with the introduction of the Double Track System for the 2018/2019 academic year.

Government, in order to cut down cost and solve other peculiar challenges the Free SHS Policy brought, changed the school system predominantly from a single track to double track where all Senior High Schools including schools under TVET run two semester programmes.

The system also demands that forms three, two and one all run the semester programme for the year totaling 162 contact days.

However, addressing the media on the double Track System coupled with the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), Director –General of the Ghana Education

Service, Prof. Kwasi Opoku Amankwah noted that the Double Track System is only applicable to first years in selected schools that get oversubscribed every academic year.

And that out of over 696 SHS for the 2018/2019 academic year, 400 schools are earmarked for the Double-Track whilst 296 schools will do the Single-Track. The Double-Track has two sessions – these are the Green Track and Gold Track.

Therefore, as the second and third years resumed school Saturday, September 8, the Single-track and Green Track which are all first year students would join their seniors Tuesday, September 11.

Thus, the Gold Track which will also commence their semester on November 8 are expected to wait patiently for Green Track to vacate.

The Director-General, in explaining the preparations they have made with regards to teachers who will teach under the system, he mentioned that per their comprehensive time table, they have recruited 8872 teachers to deliver in the sessions.

All teachers on a given track will automatically stick to that particular track, thus, if their session is on vacation the teachers must also be on vacation.
Government has secured all materials needed and has engaged in fumigation exercises in all the 696 schools.
