The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Cynthia Morrison has cautioned young boys and girls to be wary of unassuming adults since rapists do not come in inscribed attires.
The Minister made the statement while addressing the youth at a National Dialogue on Sexual Violence against girls and boys at the La-Palm Beach Hotel in Accra.
According to the minister, the word “rapists” are not inscribed on the foreheads of people who engage in sexual violence against boys and girls.
“He will come innocently crawling to you and by the time you realize, you would have been defiled…” she noted.
Gender Minister, Cynthia Morrison narrated how she was nearly assaulted sexually by a former colleague during her days at Accra Girls Senior High School.
According to the Minister, she secured an exeat to go to town with her friends to catch some fun.
She told the gathering that while in town, she met this guy who was her former colleague in Junior High School.
They recalled their old school days, after which the guy, who was with other friends, offered to drop her at school which she responded in the affirmative.
Madam Cynthia Morrison explained that when it was time for her to go back to school, the guy pleaded with her to allow him drop-off his friends in their respective houses and then finally drop her in school.
She added that after dropping the other guys off, the guy stopped in the middle of the road and started harassing her sexually.
“I had to scream for people to come to my aid. I never told my mum and she is late, so that means she never heard it”, she added.
The event which was organized by Plan Ghana in partnership with Youth Advocates Ghana had a Panel section which educated participants on the Role of the media, young people Traditional leaders and other stakeholders in addressing gender-based violence.
The panel, which was moderated by Atinka Media Village’s acting head of news and current affairs, Regina Asamoah had stakeholders from Ghana Journalist’s Association, Defense for Children, UNFPA and Youth Advocates Ghana.
