GES's punishment was harsh-NGOs on the Right of the Child

The Coordinator of NGOs on the Right of the Child, Barima Kwesi Amankwah, has opined that the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) decision to dismiss 14 final year Senior High School students for their misconduct and indiscipline acts in the ongoing WASSCE was harsh.
According to him, although the Tweneboah Koduah SHS students exhibited acts of indiscipline, they should be given other punishments instead of baring them from writing the exams.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Morning show, Ghana Nie, he recommended that the students are allowed to continue the examinations, while they are made to pay for the cost of items they destroyed at the school.
“They should be allowed to write the examination, and if there is any other punishment you can give them later, you give it to them, if they have to pay for the things they have destroyed then they are asked to pay. Parents or politicians should not be angry over the punishment given to the students, but rather speak as parents, who care for the future of their children,” he added.
He suggested that before the students are enrolled, they should be given some guidelines, including a ‘Dos and Donts’ booklet which also has punishments against it and as well made to sign it so that when the go against it, they will know their punishments.
“At every stage in life we need to engage them for them to understand what they are allowed to do in a particular stage,” he added.
