Ghana has witnessed a considerable drop in Maternal Child Mortality rate in recent times as a result of various interventions put in place by Government and its donor partners.
The Acting Government Statistician, Baah Wadieh, made the disclosure at a ceremony to launch the 2017 Maternal Health Survey Report in Accra Thursday.
The 2017 maternal health survey is the second in Ghana and is among the six demographic and Health Surveys implemented between 1988 and 2017 to provide the government of Ghana and its partners the data to make evidence based decisions to improve maternal and child health situations in Ghana.
According to the Government Statistician, there has been a remarkable improvement in the maternal health indicators since the conduct of the first maternal health survey in 2007.
According to the 2017 Ghana Maternal Health survey (GMHS) report, mothers in Ghana are healthier now than before and are able to secure and access health care.
According to the report, the number of women delivering in various health facilities has increased over the past 10 years- from 54% in 2007 to 79% in 2017. The Acting Government Statistician ascribed the reason to more women receiving antenatal care from skilled providers.
Nevertheless, Mr. Wadieh admonished the state to step up its effort in tackling maternal health and child mortality as 1 out of 19 Ghanaian children die before their fifth birthday.
