I will free all jailed 'galamseyers' when voted into power-Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mr John Dramani Mahama has promised to grant amnesty to all small-scale miners who were prosecuted and jailed during the ban of small-scale mining in the country when he wins 2020 December polls.

He was of the belief that the perpetrators have repented and that it was important to free them to re-unite with their families.

The former President made the remarks when he was addressing the Chiefs and People of Adum Banso in the Mpohor District of the Western Region.

Mr. Mahama also promised to roll out a policy which will ensure that the people mine responsibly without polluting the water bodies in the country.

He said, he has a lot of policies that will offer the miners in mining communities training, to enable them mine without losing their lives in pits that cave in occasionally.

Mr. Mahama stressed that he does not understand why Ghanaians who were mining when the ban of small-scale mining was in force were arrested and jailed whiles their Chinese counterparts who were also arrested in the act were not prosecuted but deported to their country.

He cited Asiha Hunag, the “Galamsey Queen” case to buttress his allegation against the NPP-Government.

Mr. Mahama added that Nana Akufo-Addo has been shielding Chinese against Ghanaians in the fight against galamsey operations in the country.

President Nana Akufo-Addo placed a ban on the activities of small-scale mining due to the pollution of the country’s water bodies and the depletion of the forest reserves.
