NGO embarks on “no stain” campaign to eradicate period poverty

The Kyereh Foundation, a non-profit Organisation in partnership with US based charity organization, “Could You” have embarked on a ‘no stain period” campaign for the girl child in deprived areas.

The campaign is aimed at eradicating period poverty with the introduction of a periodic distribution of free menstrual cups to females in basic schools in deprived areas.

Period poverty' basically refers to the lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints.

Most girls drop out of school due to their inability to provide for themselves sanitary towels. These students go to the extent of using rags, cement papers among others to soak their menstrual blood which stains their uniforms in the process.

The Kyereh Foundation aims at ruling out period poverty in order to allow girls stay in school during their menses.

In view of this, Kyereh Foundation last Wednesday distributed over 200 reusable menstrual cups to students of Ada Foah Catholic R/C in the Ada East District School in the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, Founder and Project Director for Kyereh Foundation explained that the foundation seeks to educate the girls on menstrual hygiene management as well as general reproductive health.

“In pursuit of a period poverty free country, the Kyereh Foundation will ensure that a lot of girls benefit from the menstrual cups. In the next two years, we want the cup to reach every single deprived community in Ghana”, she noted.
