Stop operating without license – Cyber Security Authority to service providers

cyber security

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has warned Cybersecurity Service Providers (CSPs), Cybersecurity Establishments (CEs), and Cybersecurity Professionals (CPs) without license or accreditation to stop operating in the country or face the law when they are caught.

In 2023, the Authority issued a directive to the service providers, professionals and establishments to ensure to obtain their licenses before December 31, 2023, in order to operate lawfully in the county.

In an exclusive interview with Atinka TV’s Porcia Oforiwaa Ofori, the Head of Legal and Compliance at the Cyber Security Authority, Mrs Jennifer Mensah reiterated that those who do not have license will be barred from operating until they obtain the license.

“All those doing cyber security work should put in their application so that we can verify if they qualify to have a license, if not they do not qualify, they will not get it. If you want to obtain the license, visit our website, https://www.csa.gov.gh/licence. When you visit the website, we have an application portal where you can register and when you register, you will get guidelines for the application,” she said.

She continued,”What we are saying is that if you do not have the license, do not engage yourself in any cyber security work because if you do so and you are caught, you will you face the law, either you are convicted or you will be made to pay a huge amount of money.”

Mrs Mensah noted that for now, those who apply for the license will be given provisional license without charges until a sister Government Agency determines the fees, adding it will also be communicated when the time comes.

She cautioned the public not to engage the services of providers, professionals or establishments without license.

“I want to advise workers, students, academic institutions and the general public that if someone does not have license, do not employ them to provide cyber security services for you. If you want to employ someone, ask the person if he or she has a license, if he or she is a professional, ask them to show you their accreditation and if they do, you can visit our site to verify if the number is valid or not,” she said.

She continued ,” The Cyber Security Authority is a friend to the public, we are here to protect you, your computer systems, we are here to protect critical information infrastructure so that everyone will be safe in the country. There are a lot of bad people so we are here to protect you.”

Mrs Jennifer Mensah again stated that the Authority will intensify its awareness creation across the country, targeting schools, institutions, government organizations and others.

“One of the initiatives is the licensing and accreditation and aside from that, this year, we are intensifying our awareness. We already do awareness but it will be seen more now. Everyone needs to know how to protect their phones, computers and information because sometimes if these bad people get hold of your information, they may put it out and so we are ready to educate the public to have strong passwords and they should not give their momo pin to anyone so our presence will be more visible. We are going to all the regions,” she said.

Ghana Supporters Union denies receiving $400 for each member

Ghana Supporters Union has debunked allegations made by Mr Abraham Boakye popularly known as “One Man supporter” that each of their members has received 400 dollars from the government.

The group has also denied that the government sent 2000 supporters to the 2023 AFCON.

Speaking to the  Ghanaian media in Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday, the General Secretary of the Group, Awal Kassim said,  ” The Ministry of Youth and Sports sent only 20 buses and not two thousand supporters to Ivory Coast”.

Responding to the infamous 400 dollars received by members of the Ghana Supporters Union,  he said the allegation is false adding, “ One-man supporter is aggrieved because of certain malpractices that he got himself into by taking money from companies and that monies were not properly accounted for. When we came back from Qatar,  he stated publicly that he was no longer part of the Ghana supporters union. So, why should we add you to our activities?”  he quizzed

“Our new acting executives are working hard to sustain this union. We don’t only support, we also do other things behind the scenes to help the Black Stars and we hope Ghana will surely qualify for the next stage of the ongoing AFCON,”  he added.

Ghana is a secular state; SDA’s plea likely to fail- Inusah Fuseini

Inusah Fuseini

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has revealed that it is unlikely for the plea of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SDA) to get Parliament to amend the Constitution.

This follows the Seventh-Day Adventist Church’s (SDA) reguest to to have the December 7 elections rescheduled.

In a petition sent to the Electoral Commission (EC), the church argued that the elections must be rescheduled from the customary December 7th since it falls on Saturday, a day dedicated to worshiping the Almighty God.

The first or second Tuesday will be more convenient, according to the church, to foster inclusive democracy.

“In anticipation of changing the date for general elections from December 7 to the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November, the Leadership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church met with the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, June 7.

“The Church proposed to the EC a change from the December 7 date to the 1st or 2nd Tuesday of November in a general elections’ year,” excerpts of the petition read.

Speaking on the issue Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Nana Yaw Fianko, Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, recalled a similar incident where former President John Dramani Mahama sponsored the amendment of the constitution to change the voting day from December 7.

According to the lawmaker, voting is a right not a duty and so when one does not utilize the opportunity to vote, little can be done about it.

“In 2014, former President John Dramani Mahama sponsored the amendment of the Constitution to change the voting day, when it went to Parliament it was defeated. So, on the basis of constitutional ground, when we went to parliament it was unsuccessful. I can’t get how this religious plea will get Parliament to amend the Constitution because Ghana is a secular state,” Inusah Fuseini told Nana Yaw Fianko.

Iran says strikes targeted militant group in Pakistan

Iran says it has hit a militant group in western Pakistan, its third air strike on another country this week after earlier attacks on targets in Iraq and Syria.

Iranian state TV said the operation hit two sites in Balochistan linked to the militant group Jaish al-Adl.

Pakistani officials said two children were killed and three others injured.

Islamabad said the air strike was an “illegal act” and warned it could lead to “serious consequences”.

The latest air strike come at a time of growing tension across the Middle East, with more than 100 days of unprecedented war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza and US-UK air strikes on Yemen, from where Iran-backed Houthis have been attacking commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

Tuesday’s strike in Pakistan hit a village in the vast south-western border province of Balochistan. Tehran said it was targeting Jaish al-Adl, or “army of justice”, an ethnic Baloch Sunni group that has carried out attacks inside Iran as well as on Pakistani government forces.

Late on Monday Iran launched fired ballistic missiles against targets in Iraq’s northern city of Irbil, prompting condemnation by the US.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they struck what they claimed were an Israeli “spy headquarters” in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. Four civilians were killed and six hurt in the attack, local authorities said.

Iran then hit targets in Syria’s north-western Idlib province, which is the last remaining opposition stronghold in the country, outside of Syrian government control, and is home to 2.9 million displaced people, many of whom are living in dire conditions in camps.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the strikes in Syria were in retaliation for this month’s suicide bombing that killed 84 as crowds marked the fourth anniversary of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani’s assassination by the US.

Tehran has declared that it does not want to get involved in a wider conflict emanating from the war in Gaza. But groups in its so-called “Axis of Resistance”, which include the Houthis, Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and various groups in Syria and Iraq, have been carrying out attacks on Israel and its allies to show solidarity with the Palestinians.

Following the attack on its territory, Pakistan condemned what it called an “unprovoked violation of its airspace by Iran”. It said added that it was “even more concerning that this illegal act has taken place despite the existence of several channels of communication between Pakistan and Iran”.

Pakistan and Iran’s relationship is delicate but cordial. This attack took place on the same day as Pakistan’s prime minister and Iran’s foreign minister met in Davos and while Iranian and Pakistan navy held military drills together in the Gulf.

Yet both have accused the other of harbouring militant groups that carry out attacks on the other in their border areas for years. In 2017 the Pakistan foreign ministry said that an Iranian drone was shot down as it was inside Pakistan territory, and in 2014 Iranian security forces crossed the border to pursue militants.

Security on either side of their shared border, which runs for about 900km (559 miles), has been a long-running concern for both governments.

Tehran has linked Jaish al-Adl with attacks last month close to the border, which killed more than a dozen Iranian police officers.

At the time, Iran’s interior minister Ahmad Vahidi said the militants responsible had entered the country from Pakistan.

China on Wednesday urged Pakistan and Iran to show “restraint” and “avoid actions that would lead to an escalation of tension”. Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning added that Beijing saw the countries as “close neighbours”.

Jaish al-Adl is the “most active and influential” Sunni militant group operating in Sistan-Baluchestan, according to the office of the US Director of National Intelligence. It is designated as a terrorist group by Washington and Tehran.

Resign to save yourself and govt – Atta Akyea tells Ofori Atta

Samuel Atta Akyea, Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, has admonished Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to consider resigning from his position to save himself and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Many have called on Ofori-Atta to resign citing the country’s current economic crisis as basis.

The Minority in Parliament has reiterated calls for the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta to resign or be sacked.

The group contends that the Minister’s incompetence has contributed to the economic crisis which has necessitated the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme for $3 billion in support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Minority Caucus filed the vote of censure motion against the Finance Minister, accusing him of mismanagement of the economy, financial recklessness, conflict of interest, and gross mismanagement of the economy.

In an exclusive interview on Citi TV monitored by atinkaonline.com , Atta Akyea said it is his (Ofori Atta) individual decision to make as to whether he should  go or he should continue.

“For me, what is very frightening is the fact that you have a whole army of people saying look you’ve had enough. I think that that could be a way for him to relax. Look at all the burdens on one man. So it is his individual decision to make as to whether he should  go or he should continue.”

“He should look at himself and look at the troubles that everybody believes, I mean when he is not there then the nation will have peace…He should save himself and save the government and have his peace because he needs it,” the lawmaker said in the interview.

December 7 election: SDA wants date rescheduled

district level elections
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana

The Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SDA)  is pushing for the December 7 elections to be rescheduled because it falls on a Sabbath Day, which is sacred.

4 new vehicle assembling plants to start operations in 2024

Four additional vehicle assembling plants will start operations in 2024, the government has revealed in its 2024 Citizens Budget.

There will also be two manufacturers of automotive components, parts and accessories.

According to the government’s blueprint, an additional 152 One District One Factory (1D1F) factories are currently under construction and expected to be fully operational in 2024 and 2025.

The 2024 Budget has been developed to deepen the implementation of the PC-PEG and protect recent macroeconomic gains, expand investment in the real sector to execute the new growth strategy and set a new course, consolidate and complete ongoing infrastructural projects to enhance productivity and welfare as well as mobilise climate finance to build resilience and promote climate-sensitive growth.

The government will continue to implement policy initiatives, improve infrastructure investments to advance the nation’s economic progress, and ensure Ghana remains attractive for domestic and foreign investors.

“We do this knowing that the key to our prosperity is not handing out free goods and services to our underprivileged folks. Rather, it is by providing skills and finance to enable people to generate income and jobs”, the 2024 Citizens Budget pointed out.

In 2023, the government implemented various programmes aimed at creating jobs and establishing Ghana as the new manufacturing hub in West Africa and Africa.

These programmes included an increase in the number of operational One District One Factory (1D1F) projects from 126 in 2022 to 169, resulting in 169,870 direct and indirect jobs and improvement in Ghana’s position as a growing automotive hub in the sub-region with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art assembly plant to produce KIA brand of vehicles in Ghana by Rana Motors.

Additionally, six major global vehicle manufacturers launched their assembly plants in Ghana, producing 11 brands of vehicles.

There was also a distribution of 10 million pineapple suckers and 500,000 coconut seedlings to farmers and out-growers under the Ghana Export Promotion Authority’s (GEPA) programme and the implementation of the AfCFTA Market Expansion Programme to assist manufacturers and exporters to enter the African duty-free and quota-free market.

Fifty-one Ghanaian companies received AfCFTA Rules of Origin Certification for 300 products in 2023. 63 companies visited markets in Kenya to engage with prospective buyers, focusing on cosmetics, processed foods, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, coconut oil, shea butter, and garments.
