The unidentified individuals have reportedly destroyed large portions of plant cover, exposing the area to direct sunlight and endangering the ecological balance of the lake. Ongoing excavation activities have further raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the area.

Delivering the welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, described the occasion as a deliberate effort to recognise individuals whose work has helped shape the nation’s institutional and democratic foundations. He noted that the ceremony was not merely formal, but a moment of reflection on service, sacrifice and the often understated contributions that sustain society.

The ceremony highlighted Mr Tsikata’s distinguished career as an academic, legal practitioner and public servant. From his academic excellence at the University of Ghana to further studies at Oxford University, he has demonstrated intellectual depth, discipline and a sustained commitment to the rule of law. The Dean of the UPSA Law School, Professor Ernest Kofi Abotsi, underscored the wider significance of Mr Tsikata’s legacy for legal education. Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie also spoke on the importance of integrity and judicial independence. He urged lawyers, judges and students to remain steadfast in defending the rule of law, noting that the legal system must always serve as an instrument of justice.

Ghana Immigration Service Rescues Over 300 in Crackdown on Street Begging Networks

0

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has carried out the second phase of a major operation targeting exploitative street begging networks across parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Service said the intelligence-led anti-trafficking exercise was aimed at rescuing victims and dismantling organised networks that exploit vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children.

Widespread Operation Across Accra

The early morning operation targeted several key areas, including Abossey Okai, Zongo Junction, Nima, Madina, and Kaneshie, where authorities claim organised street begging activities have been prevalent.

Officials explained that such practices are often linked to criminal networks that traffic and control vulnerable persons, using them for financial gain under the guise of street begging.

Over 300 Persons Encountered

According to the GIS, a total of 305 West African nationals were encountered during the operation. This included:

113 children
66 adult women
126 adult men

Among the children, 36 were boys and 77 were girls, highlighting what authorities describe as a significant concern about child vulnerability within these networks.

Ongoing Profiling and Support

All rescued individuals are currently undergoing profiling and immigration procedures at a dedicated centre in line with established protocols.

The Immigration Service said it is working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure that victims—especially children—receive appropriate care, protection, and support.

Continued Crackdown

The operation builds on earlier efforts, with authorities intensifying coordination and targeted interventions to dismantle networks facilitating exploitation through street begging.

The GIS reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing immigration laws while safeguarding vulnerable populations and combating human trafficking in Ghana.

‎South African Politician Sentenced to Five Years Over Firearm Offences

Source: BBC
Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, ‎Julius Malema, has been handed a five-year prison sentence after a South African court found him guilty of illegally possessing and discharging a firearm in public.

‎The ruling was delivered by Magistrate Twanet Olivier at a court in East London, where Malema appeared composed as the sentence was read.

‎The case stems from a 2018 incident in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, where Malema was captured on video firing multiple shots from what was identified as a semi-automatic rifle during his party’s fifth anniversary celebrations. The footage later circulated widely, triggering legal action.

‎In earlier proceedings concluded last year, Malema was convicted on several counts, including unlawful possession of a firearm, discharging a weapon in a public setting, and endangering public safety.

‎During the trial, Malema denied ownership of the weapon and argued that his actions were intended to energise supporters at the event. However, the court rejected this explanation.

‎In delivering the sentence, the magistrate indicated that the act was deliberate and formed a central part of the event rather than a spontaneous decision.

‎Following the judgment, Malema’s legal team swiftly filed an appeal in a bid to overturn the sentence and prevent his immediate incarceration.

‎The case has drawn significant public and political attention, given Malema’s role as a prominent opposition figure and sitting member of parliament in South Africa.

Real Madrid on the Brink of a Trophyless Season

Source: Noble Atsu

Real Madrid is on the verge of ending the season without silverware, as a difficult campaign continues to unravel for one of football’s most successful clubs.

Their hopes in the UEFA Champions League were dashed after a quarterfinal elimination by Bayern Munich, with the anticipated comeback failing to materialise.

Real Madrid on the Brink of a Trophyless Season

The season has been marked by instability, particularly following the managerial change that saw Álvaro Arbeloa take over from Xabi Alonso. Since then, performances have been inconsistent, falling short of the club’s high standards.

Domestic competitions have provided little consolation. Madrid lost to FC Barcelona in the Supercopa and suffered a shock exit to Albacete Balompié in the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid on the Brink of a Trophyless Season

With those opportunities gone, focus shifted to the La Liga title race. However, Los Blancos now trail Barcelona by nine points, leaving their chances of a comeback slim. While mathematically possible, it would require a perfect run of results and significant slip-ups from their rivals.

Real Madrid on the Brink of a Trophyless Season

Failure to turn things around could result in a second consecutive trophyless season—an outcome widely considered unacceptable for a club of Real Madrid’s stature.

The situation has sparked concerns among fans and analysts alike, raising questions about whether this is a temporary setback or the beginning of a deeper crisis at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, with expectations of major changes looming.

Mr. Akamba noted that the project, once completed, is expected to become one of the most modern markets in the constituency. He also cautioned the contractor to avoid unnecessary delays, warning that any undue setbacks could lead to termination of the contract.

Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for Gomoa East, Margaret Naana Ackom, highlighted the project’s potential to create employment opportunities for young people in the area.

She explained that local youth would be engaged during the construction phase, with more job opportunities expected after completion due to increased commercial activity.

In addition, the Central Regional Member of the Council of State, Habib Hakeem, commended President Mahama for fulfilling a key campaign promise to the people of Gomoa East and the Central Region.

MoH Begins Validation and Posting Process for Health Professionals

The Ministry of Health Ghana has announced the commencement of a nationwide validation and posting process for qualified health professionals, as part of efforts to recruit and deploy personnel across the country’s healthcare system.

In an official notice issued on April 15, 2026, the Ministry said all prospective applicants are required to verify their eligibility through its online recruitment portal before proceeding with the posting process.

The exercise is expected to streamline recruitment while ensuring that only duly certified professionals are engaged.

According to the Ministry, applicants must visit the official recruitment website, verify.mohrecruitment.com, and validate their status using their verified Personal Identification Number (PIN) or Index Number.

The validation process, officials say, will help determine whether candidates are in good standing with their respective professional councils.

“This process will enable applicants to know whether or not they are in good standing with their respective council,” the statement noted, emphasizing the importance of compliance to avoid delays or disqualification.

The Ministry has outlined a detailed rollout plan spanning several weeks, beginning with PIN verification from April 16 to April 20. This will be followed by specific recruitment windows for different professional groups.

Pharmacists, pharmaceutical technicians, physician assistants, and community health-related applicants are scheduled for processing between April 22 and April 25. Allied health professionals will undergo their phase from April 27 to May 1.

Nurses and midwives who form a critical component of the health workforce, will have a longer window from May 4 to May 15. The Ministry indicated that priority will be given to the 2021 batch of trained nurses and midwives, signaling a targeted approach to clearing backlogs in postings.

The exercise will then shift focus to regional allocations, with designated dates for various parts of the country. The Upper East and Upper West Regions are scheduled for May 4–5, followed by the Savannah and North East Regions on May 6–7.

Applicants from the Oti and Bono East Regions will be processed on May 8–9, while those from the Western North and Ahafo Regions are set for May 10–11.

Further regional postings will take place on a single-day basis, including the Volta and Northern Regions on May 12, Central and Western Regions on May 13, and Bono and Ashanti Regions on May 14. The final phase will cover the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions on May 15.

The Ministry has urged applicants to strictly adhere to the timelines provided, cautioning that failure to comply could disrupt the recruitment process.

The validation and posting initiative forms part of broader efforts by the government to address staffing gaps in health facilities, improve service delivery, and enhance access to quality healthcare across Ghana.
