Members of the School Feeding Caterers Association are demanding payment of arrears for two terms and an increase in feeding grants.

The caterers have threatened to boycott cooking services effective today Monday, May 16, until their demands are met.

The caterers also want government to increase the current feeding grant from ¢0.97 to ¢3 per child.

Speaking to host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, a member of the School Feeding Caterers Association, Ama Quarshie revealed that the caterers are running huge losses are in debts from cooking hot meals for the children at the current ¢0.97 price.

Citing the economic crises and inflation as factors, Ama Quarshie stressed that the ¢0.97 is insufficient to provide good food for the children.

“Our issue is disheartening. What can ¢0.97 do? How much is porridge sold? We are not going to cook until we hear something from them. We have signed a contract to pre-fund the cooking, but government hasn’t paid us for two terms, how are we going to cook when we haven’t received payments? We need our payment, and we want an increment from the ¢0.97 to ¢3 or more,” Ama Quarshie told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.

Responding to the concerns raised, Public Relation Officer of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) Siba Alfa who also spoke with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, asked the caterers to exercise patience adding that all their concerns will be addressed.

He revealed that the secretariat is set to meet the caterers today Monday 16th May 2022.

Siba Alfa also pleaded with the caterers to fund the cooking despite the challenges assuring them that their demands will be looked at.

“We have heard all their concerns and we are gathering all the facts and at the appropriate time their concerns will be addressed. For now, I will plead with them to go and cook for the children until we discuss their issues with government and update them with the feedback,” he added.
