Western Togoland: Successive governments ignored our pleas – Crusaders

The spokesperson for the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), George Nyakpo, the group crusading for an Independent Western Togoland has lamented that the failure of previous governments to heed their pleas has led to the intensification of their demand for an independent country.

He explained that residents of the Western Togoland voted in 1956 to form a union with the Gold Coast (now Ghana) which was about to gain independent but the union had not been established several years after the independence.

In an interview with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka FM’s morning show, AM Drive, Mr Nyakpo said the failure of the state of Ghana to implement the initial agreement in the 1956 plebiscite has contributed to their decision to secede from Ghana.

Some members of the HSG have been arrested by the government for trying to form an independent state out of Ghana. The leader of the group, has since been granted bail.

A statement released by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Simon Tenkuu from the Police Public Affairs Directorate had claimed that the members of the group were also illegally recruiting and training young people in a ‘militia-style’ for them to form a core of their supposed country’s armed forces and police force.
