Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has called for broader investment in Ghana’s football development, stressing that rebuilding the national team requires more than just recruiting talented players and coaches.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 21, Queiroz said Ghana must strengthen the structures and systems around the Black Stars if the country wants to consistently compete with the continent’s top footballing nations.
The Portuguese coach said success at international level cannot be achieved through the efforts of players and coaches alone, but requires the right environment, organisation and resources to support the development of the national team.
His comments come as Ghana begins a new phase under his leadership, with the immediate objective of securing qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations while building a team capable of competing at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz has previously stressed that Ghana must be prepared to work harder and smarter than its competitors if the Black Stars are to return to the top of African football.
“If we want to compete with the best, it is not enough to work as hard as they do. We have to work even harder and better,” he said in an earlier engagement.
The coach’s call for wider investment also comes against the backdrop of ongoing changes to Ghana’s football structures.
The Ghana Football Association has recently reshaped Queiroz’s technical team, appointing former Black Stars international Godwin Attram as an assistant coach.
Queiroz is now preparing the team for a crucial 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, beginning with an away clash against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on Thursday, September 24, followed by a home fixture against The Gambia on September 29.
For Queiroz, however, the immediate qualifying campaign forms part of a much larger rebuilding project aimed at creating a sustainable foundation for the Black Stars and Ghanaian football beyond the current generation.
