Ghana and Panama have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to officially commence bilateral political consultations between the two countries.
The agreement was signed on Sunday, September 20, 2026, on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, signed the agreement on behalf of Ghana, while his Panamanian counterpart, Javier Eduardo Martínez-Acha Vásquez, represented Panama.
The MoU is expected to provide a structured framework for strengthening cooperation between the two countries in several areas of mutual interest.
Key areas identified include maritime affairs, cocoa production, trade and technical assistance in the extractive sector.
The agreement is also expected to facilitate regular political consultations between Ghana and Panama and create opportunities for both countries to share expertise and deepen economic relations.
The signing forms part of Ghana’s broader diplomatic engagements aimed at expanding partnerships and advancing areas of mutual interest with countries around the world.
In a lighter moment following the signing, Mr Ablakwa also used the occasion to jokingly reconcile with Panama after Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, defeated Panama at the recently concluded FIFA World Cup.
He described the development as part of efforts to strengthen the longstanding relations between Ghana and Panama.
The two countries are expected to build on the new framework to expand cooperation in areas that can deliver mutual benefits to their citizens.
